Jared Remy, son of Boston Red Sox commentator Jerry Remy, was charged with the gruesome murder of his girlfriend in Waltham on Friday and was ordered detained without bail.

At his appearance in Waltham District Court, where he was charged with murder and assault and battery in the death of 27-year-old Jennifer Martel, Remy pled not guilty. Prosecutor Lisa McGovern reportedly presented gory details of the assault while Remy sat in court, appearing enraged and showing no remorse, as reported by WBZ-TV’s Karen Anderson.
Around 9 p.m. on Thursday, officers were summoned to a residence in the Windsor Village complex due to a stabbing complaint. According to their research, the fight between Remy and his assailant occurred in the kitchen, stairs, living room, and finally on the patio of Remy’s townhouse.

Several witnesses to the altercation contacted emergency services. Eyewitnesses informed officers that they observed Remy on the terrace repeatedly stabbing Martel with a knife. Remy reportedly swung the blade towards the individual who intervened to break the fight.
According to McGovern, Remy was drenched with blood when officers arrived. Court papers state that he allegedly had a diamond ring concealed under a sunglasses box. After seven years together, the pair finally decided to take the next step and become engaged in 2009.
A lawyer for Remy said his client’s head and hands wounds were self-inflicted “defensive wounds.” Martel was discovered by police outdoors on the patio, bleeding extensively from knife wounds to the shoulder and neck. A blue cloth concealed her face, and she wore no clothing.
Through the night, police remained at the apartment, and around 3 a.m., the medical examiner’s office took her corpse. Martel and Remy’s daughter, who is four years old, was in the flat during the incident but escaped unharmed.
Police said that Jared Remy assaulted and battered Martel three days earlier by pushing him against a mirror in the house’s bathroom. On Wednesday, he was taken into custody, formally charged, and released on his recognizance.
A decent and caring human being, she was. She always seemed to be smiling. Her grandpa, Richard Martel, attests to her tenacity. Martel told WBZ-TV that he had not seen his granddaughter in over a year but that he had heard she was planning to leave Remy due to the difficulties the two had been experiencing in their relationship.
So yet, neither Jerry Remy nor the Red Sox have spoken. The defendant’s father, Jerry Remy, was absent during his son’s arraignment. The family’s attorney Peter Bella described Remy as “devastated.”

Late on Friday morning, one of Jerry Remy’s colleagues Tweeted a short message on Remy’s account.
On Friday afternoon, Jerry Remy’s employer, NESN, issued the following statement:
The news of a horrific catastrophe reached us this morning. We at NESN and the Red Sox and Jerry Remy are heartbroken about what has happened to Jennifer Martel, and we send our condolences to her family.
Since 1998, Jared Remy has reportedly had fifteen complaints filed against him, as reported by WBZ NewsRadio 1030. There are six charges for physical violence. WBZ reports that Remy has a history of assault and battery charges dating back to 2005, 2003, and 1998.
