Jay Wright Jr. was born on December 24, 1961. In 2001, he was the head coach of Villanova University. In his 21 years as head coach, Wright guided Villanova to six Big East Conference championships and 16 appearances in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats reached a total of four Final Fours (in 2009, 2016, 2018, and 2022) while Wright’s tenure as head coach, winning two national championships in 2016 and 2018.
As a coach, Wright has been entered into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in the class of 2021. He is widely thought to be one of the best coaches in NCAA history. For six years (1994–2001), he was the head coach at Hofstra University. In both 2000 and 2001, his teams made the NCAA Tournament.

After graduating from college, Wright was hired as an assistant coach at the Division III University of Rochester. In 1986, he was hired as an assistant coach at Drexel University, which was his first job as a Division I college coach. During the years from 1987 to 1992, he worked for Rollie Massimino at Villanova. In 1992, he began working with Massimino at UNLV, where he remained until 1994.
On March 27, 2001, Villanova hired Wright as its seventh head coach in the 81-year history of the team. Forward In 2004–05, Curtis Sumpter and Allen Ray, and Randy Foye helped Wright’s Wildcats have a breakout season. Villanova finished the season with a 22–7 record after victories over No. 2 Kansas and No. 3 Boston College. The Wildcats earned the fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament, their first trip since 1999, as a result of their efforts. Villanova had to defeat both New Mexico and Florida in an effort to progress to the Sweet 16. However, they were eliminated from the tournament in the following round after a tight loss to top-seeded North Carolina (and eventual champion).
Villanova was ranked 19th in the final AP poll, their highest position in eight years. Due to the return of the majority of its players from the previous season, the Wildcats were ranked in the top four of both major preseason polls heading into the 2005–06 season. Wildcats seniors Allan Ray and Randy Foye led the team to a 25–4 regular-season record, which included a 14–2 Big East regular-season record, tying them for first place in the league with the University of Connecticut.
