JB Smoove Biography
JB Smoove, whose real name is Jerry Angelo Brooks, was born on December 16, 1963, in Plymouth, North Carolina. He’s the oldest of three children in his family, with Floyd Brooks as his father and Elizabeth Brooks as his mother.
While growing up, he spent a lot of time in Mount Vernon, New York, and later connected with his mother’s side of the family in Plymouth. Unfortunately, his father passed away when he was 15 years old.
JB finished high school at Mount Vernon High School in 1983. He then went on to Norfolk State University in Virginia, where he studied engineering and graphic design.
Even though JB valued hard work and took on various jobs, like working at a perfume factory and selling fire extinguishers, he had a surprising start in entertainment. He worked at a t-shirt branding business called Mrs. G’s T’s, where he sold custom-printed shirts.

While he seemed ready for business, his cheerful demeanor with customers didn’t immediately hint at his future in entertainment. Despite that, JB’s first step in the entertainment world wasn’t acting – he actually began as a dancer.
His entertainment journey began with dancing as part of a hip-hop group named J. Smoove. Eventually, he transitioned into acting and landed roles in TV shows like The Lyricist’s Lounge on MTV. He then appeared in Lyricist’s Lounge, High End Mix, Pootie Tang, and his first big movie, Mr. Deeds, alongside Adam Sandler.
JB’s talent got him spots on shows like Saturday Night Live (2003-2005), Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2004–2013), Comics Unleashed (2007–2011), and the ongoing Curb Your Enthusiasm (2007–present).
