Condition That Contributed To His Death
Jerry Blavat, a Philadelphia legend, passed away on Friday at 82 due to complications from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder. According to Blavat’s longtime companion Keely Stahl and close friend A.J. Mattia, the DJ’s death was mainly caused by the unusual disease, among other health difficulties.
Myasthenia gravis is characterized by muscle weakness because antibodies block signals between the neurological system and the muscles. Even though there is now no cure for the disease, patients who receive therapy can expect to live with it for a very long time.
A myasthenic crisis occurs when the muscles that regulate breathing become too weak to allow the patient to continue breathing. Here, with the help of Shawn Bird, MD, director of the myasthenia gravis clinic at Penn Medicine, we’ll cover the disease’s fundamentals.
