U.S. Auto Club reported that Harrison, Ohio’s sprint car driver Justin Owen passed away from injuries sustained in a racing accident in southeastern Indiana. In a qualifying race for the AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship held on Saturday night at Lawrenceburg Speedway, Owen’s car reportedly hit the outside wall and flipped multiple times along the third turn.
After the accident, USAC decided to call off the rest of the event. According to USAC, 26-year-old Owen won two main events and the 2022 track championship at Lawrenceburg Raceway.

Justin Owen Dies In Racing Crash
Owen was killed in a crash on April 9, 2023, USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship race at Lawrenceburg Raceway in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The Harrison, Ohio, competitor’s qualifying drive ended abruptly when he lost control of his car and careened into the wall on the high side of Turn 3.

His car did a number of flips before it finally went airborne and landed in the middle of the track. The collision occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m., and USAC immediately red-flagged the race, calling it off 30 minutes later. They broke the news of Owen’s death just after midnight.
Career Path of Justin Owen
At the end of the previous season, Owen and Lawrenceburg won the title, but one of Owen’s biggest victories on the track was at the Dick Gaines Memorial. The Lernerville Raceway in Pennsylvania, the Paragon Speedway in Indiana, and the Night of Champions in Lawrenceburg were the sites of his 2019 triumphs.
He also has a win with BOSS from 2016 at Lernerville. Owen has two USAC feature starts under his belt, both in 2021 and 2019. Even as he got older, Justin Owen never stopped following his dream of being a race car driver. After entering the world of sprint car racing in 2014, he quickly rose to prominence in Central Pennsylvania.
His first major victory came in 2017 at Port Royal Speedway, and by 2020, he had won the track championship there as well. Everyone who knew Justin Owen could attest to his natural ability and success on the field. On the track, he was a ferocious competitor, but off it, he was a humble and generous person.
His enthusiasm for racing and his infectious grin made him an inspiration to all around him. “Justin was a great kid who loved racing more than anything. He was also a great brother and friend. He had a strong sense of mission in life, and we cherish the time we were able to spend with him. We appreciate all of the prayers and well wishes from the racing community and his many followers.
