The first competition Whitworth was victorious in was the Kelly Girls Open, which she won in 1962. She ended up winning a total of six major championships. Between 1965 and 1972, she set a new record for most wins of the Vare Trophy, given to the golfer on the LPGA Tour with the lowest scoring average. Her induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame occurred in 1975.
She was honored with the Female Athlete of the Year title by the Associated Press in 1965 and 1967.
