Lance Kerwin, a child actor who became famous in the late 1970s as the star of the sometimes controversial NBC teen drama series James at 15, died on Tuesday in San Clemente, California. The cause of death is not known. He was 62.
Kerwin was a busy child actor in the 1970s. In 1979, he starred in the TV miniseries Salem’s Lot, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. He played the main character, Mark Petrie, who was a young fan of scary movies and became a vampire hunter.

Mark is visited by a schoolmate who has turned into a vampire and floats eerily outside his bedroom window in the film’s most memorable scene.
Kerwin’s TV career began in the early to mid-1970s when he appeared on shows like Little House on the Prairie, Emergency!, and Wonder Woman. However, it wasn’t until 1977 that James at 15, gave him his big break.
Dan Wakefield, who created and wrote the coming-of-age drama series, tried to show teenagers in a more realistic way than was standard at the time.

In 1978, when the show was called James at 16, the main character, played by Kerwin, lost his virginity to a Swedish exchange student. This made the news. Two years later, Kerwin was in the TV movie The Boy Who Drank Too Much with Scott Baio, who played a teenager who drank too much.

During the middle of the 1990s, Kerwin kept acting, usually as a guest star on episodic TV. By the decade’s end, he stopped acting and became a minister for young people. Later, he moved to Hawaii to work for the U-Turn for Christ ministry. A GoFundMe page from 2021 showed that Kerwin had fallen on hard times after having health problems.
His children Fox, Terah, Kailani, Justus, and his wife Savanah will carry on after him. In the coming weeks, we should know more about a planned ceremony for the afterlife.
