The legendary actor Michael Lerner, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 1991’s Barton Fink, has passed away. He was 81. His nephew, Sam Lerner, has confirmed his demise, albeit the cause of death remains unknown.
Sam, who plays Geoff Schwartz on The Goldbergs, posted on Instagram about Lerner’s passing. Sam posted a slideshow of photos with the words, “We lost a legend last night,” in tribute to the late actor.

The fact that he was my relative will always make me feel unique; he was the coolest, most self-assured, most talented individual I’ve ever met. Everyone who knew him could attest to his (excellent) insanity.
I feel blessed to have spent so much time with him, and we are all fortunate to be able to enjoy his work in perpetuity. He said, “Rest in peace, Michael. May you have many Cuban cigars, soft chairs, and never-ending movie marathons.”
