Michelle Yeoh was born Michelle Yeoh Choo-Kheng on August 6, 1962, in Ipoh, Perak, Federation of Malaya. She is of Hokkien and Cantonese ancestry, and her parents are Yeoh Kian Teik, a lawyer and MCA politician. Yeoh started dancing at the age of four. When she was 15 years old, she moved to the United Kingdom with her parents and enrolled in a boarding school.
Yeoh later studied at the London-based Royal Academy of Dance, where she honed her dancing skills. Her dream was to become a highly successful professional ballet dancer, but a spine injury prevented her from realizing this goal. Instead, she became very interested in acting and choreography, so she enrolled at a university where she eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Arts and a minor in acting.
