At the age of 78, Richard Belzer, an actor best known for his part as Detective John Munch on “Law & Order,” passed away.
According to author Bill Scheft, a close friend of the actor, “He passed at home early this morning in the south of France – in his home in the south of France — with his family about him.”
The Hollywood Reporter quoted Scheft, a former writer for “Late Show with David Letterman,” as saying of Belzer, “He had plenty of health concerns, and his last words were, ‘F—- you, motherf—-er.'”
“The news of Richard Belzer’s passing makes me very sad. “Saturday Night Live” cast member Laraine Newman said, “I adored this guy so much “tweeted from 1975 to 1980. “When I arrived in New York to film SNL, he was one of my first pals. Every week, we used to eat out at Sheepshead Bay for lobster. among the most hilarious people ever. a pro at working crowds. RIP darling.”
Belzer was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1983, the Baltimore Sun reported. That would eventually inspire his 1997 HBO comedy special “Another Lone Nut.”

During a 1985 incident on Belzer’s talk show, Hulk Hogan put him in a choke hold, causing Belzer to pass out and hit his head on the studio floor, People magazine reported. The two settled out of court after Belzer sued.

On NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street” in 1993, Belzer created the character of Munch. He later played the same part on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” From 1999 and 2013, according to People magazine, he made appearances in roughly 330 episodes of “SVU,” in addition to two cameos in 2014 and 2016.
Harlee McBride, his wife, is the only one left. In 1985, they got hitched. No biological children were ever born to the couple, however, McBride does have two children from a prior union, Jessica and Shannon Benton.
Belzer, a self-described fan of conspiracy theories and a published author, wrote a book titled “Hit List: An In-Depth Study into the Strange Deaths of Witnesses to the JFK Murder” which was published in 2016.
