Robert Gottlieb, a legendary editor at Simon & Schuster, Alfred A. Knopf, and The New Yorker whose work shaped the careers of countless middle- and late-20th-century authors, passed away on Wednesday in Manhattan. He was 92.

His wife, Maria Tucci, confirmed his de@th at a hospital. John le Carré, Toni Morrison, John Cheever, Joseph Heller, Doris Lessing, and Chaim Potok are some authors whose novels Mr Gottlieb edited.
Other authors he worked with include Michael Crichton, Ray Bradbury, Antonia Fraser, Barbara Tuchman, former president Bill Clinton, and former Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham.
He worked for 30 years at Simon & Schuster and Knopf, where he edited and published hundreds of manuscripts, many of which were bestsellers and made their writers famous and wealthy.

His coworkers described him as intelligent but gentle with the fragile egos of authors. He gained the respect of his peers as an author advocate and eventually rose to the position of president and editor-in-chief at Knopf.
