When Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack created Smiling Friends for Cartoon Network’s nightly Adult Swim programming block, the show centered around a modest charity dedicated to making people happy. Adult Swim’s annual April Fools’ Day event aired the pilot episode on April 1, 2020, along with Cusack’s other series, YOLO: Crystal Fantasy. Originally scheduled to broadcast in late 2021, Adult Swim ordered a complete season on May 19, 2021.
As co-creator Zach Hadel revealed at a panel discussion at Adult Swim Festival on November 12, 2021, the series will launch “within a few months,” shifting the release date forward to 2022. The pilot episode and an 11-minute special are included in the first season’s nine episodes. Adult Swim aired the whole first season, save for the special, in a single night on January 10, 2022, despite early plans for a weekly release.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Storyline
Pim and Charlie, two employees of Smiling Friends, a corporation that promotes happiness and smiles, are watching a television show that has only a strange-looking character dancing on a black background. When Pim tells Charlie that the show is going to get great, Charlie is a little irritated and asks if they can watch anything else. An employee named Alan is kneeling behind the refrigerator when Charlie comes in to see what he’s up to.
There’s evidence to suggest that Alan is using broccoli as bait in his mouse trap, and his treasured piece of cheese has vanished, leading him to believe there’s a mouse in the workplace. To his dismay, Charlie and Pim deny stealing it from him. At the end of the episode, Pim apologizes to Charlie for showing him the show without showing him the pivotal moment in which the character performs a spin. Charlie and Pim are abruptly summoned to their boss’s office by an alarm.
It is confirmed that Charlie and his coworkers have been hired, but the supervisor asks if they’d mind watching someone eat while he finishes his work. The boss begins to breastfeed a young creature (presumably his son) in a slightly uncomfortable manner after the two employees indicate they don’t mind. A mother had called to express her concern about her son, who had become “a bit mopey lately,” according to him. Charlie and Pim agree to help the child smile after he gives them the address and makes them awkwardly watch him breastfeed for a minute.
When Charlie knocks on the door of their client’s residence, Pim jumps up and down and shouts about how much he loves children. Charlie cautions against saying something out loud in front of an old woman who answers the door. After they affirm that they are the Smiling Friends, she leads the way inside. When the two follow the mother into her son Desmond’s room, they find a disorganized space with only a mattress and an obnoxious middle-aged man with a gun to his head.
Pim asks him what’s wrong as the two try to calm him down. His wife and children have abandoned him, his dog died of a broken heart a year ago, and he intends to take his own life. Desmond confesses that his life is not going well. Charlie gets Pim aside and tells them that he believes Desmond is a hopeless case and that they should go. Pim is shocked and refuses to believe Charlie. When Desmond asks Pim for help, Pim tells him that they have never given up on a job so far and that Desmond will be smiling by the end of the day if they help him. Desmond is willing to accept their assistance, but he threatens to shoot himself in front of Pim and Charlie if they are unable to. Desmond’s remark has a negative effect on Pim’s celebration.
Counting paper clips at the Smiling Friends’ office, Alan remarks angrily in gibberish to another employee, Glee, that there is one less than the last time he tallied. Alan was startled when he heard a loud snap and shriek and realized his mouse trap had been set off. A blood trail can be seen flowing behind the refrigerator from the trap, but it is empty. Alan pulls the fridge, discovering a large hole in the wall behind it, and goes through, discovering a man working on a computer inside the office walls. Instead of answering his own embarrassing question, he hastily covers the computer screen with his hands, insisting he didn’t see anything. As an alternative, Alan answers that he probably should not have been dwelling in the office walls, to begin with, and continues searching for the mouse.
