Tom Monaghan Early Life
He was four years old when his father died. Monaghan’s mother had a hard time raising him alone, and when he was six years old, he and his younger brother ended up in an orphanage until Monaghan’s mother came back in 1949 and got them back.
The orphanage, St. Joseph Home for Children in Jackson, Michigan, was run by the Felician Sisters of Livonia; one of the nuns there inspired his dedication to the Catholic faith, and he later enrolled in St. Joseph’s Seminary, in Grand Rapids, with the goal of becoming a priest. He was expelled from the seminary for a series of disciplinary violations afterward.
In 1956, Monaghan joined the US Marine Corps by mistake. He had meant to join the Army, but he didn’t know. In 1959, he was given an honorable discharge.
