Here we are talking about Twitter Suspends Account Tracking Elon Musk Jet. Advocates for press freedom attacked Twitter founder Elon Musk on Thursday for suspending the accounts of numerous prominent journalists who write about the billionaire and his erratic management of the social media platform.
Following a sudden change in policy regarding accounts that share the travels of private jets using publicly available information, Musk made the exceedingly rare decision to ban journalists from Twitter.
People who break Twitter’s new rules will be suspended for seven days, Musk stated in a tweet. The conflict between Musk and the jet-tracking account was a topic that was discussed by many of the journalists who were suspended on Thursday night in tweets and articles.
Donie O’Sullivan of CNN, Ryan Mac of the New York Times, Drew Harwell of the Washington Post, Micah Lee of the Intercept, and journalist Aaron Rupar are the journalists whose accounts have been suspended. Rupar stated in a post on Substack that he is not aware of why he was suspended.
He claimed to have posted a link to the jet-tracking account’s Facebook page on Wednesday. Maybe that’s what did it,” wrote Rupar. But I’m still unsure of what rule that might have broken. Musk’s action is alarming, according to Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.

Jaffer said in a statement that Musk suspending journalists’ accounts was “petty, vindictive, and totally disgraceful”—especially in light of the fact that Musk has falsely identified himself as a defender of free expression. Senior counsel at the advocacy organization Free Press Nora Benavidez reiterated Jaffer’s comments, stating that suspending journalists based on what appears to be personal animosity “sets a terrible precedent.”
The suspension of journalists “endangers the broader public’s capacity to know what is happening inside Twitter,” Benavidez said, adding that Musk “already has a lengthy track record of trying to quiet people he dislikes or speech that is critical of him.” Twitter’s head of Trust & Safety Ella Irwin stated in a statement to NPR that publishing people’s real-time location information on Twitter is now against its regulations.
Irwin stated, “Without making any specific comments about any particular user accounts, I can confirm that we will suspend any accounts that transgress our privacy policies and endanger other users. Journalists and other accounts are not exempt from this rule, according to the statement. Musk claimed on Twitter shortly after the suspensions that they were not a response to negative press. Criticizing me all day is acceptable, but putting my family at risk by leaking my real-time location is not, Musk wrote in a tweet.
Musk’s ‘Crazy Stalker’ Allegations Have Led to Suspensions
Musk canceled accounts on Wednesday that tracked the whereabouts of private planes flown by billionaires, government officials, and others, including Musk’s own plane, on the grounds that the accounts amounted to “doxxing,” or disclosing personal information to enable harassers.
Musk further asserted that a “crazy stalker” in Los Angeles used an account maintained by a 20-year-old University of Florida student with the name @ElonJet to track a car transporting one of Musk’s children.
Along with the journalists, a Mastodon Twitter account—a platform used as a substitute for Twitter—was also suspended on Thursday. Following Musk’s raid, the ElonJet account’s creator visited a number of websites, including Mastodon.
Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” has brought back a large number of accounts that were banned from Twitter, including the account of former President Trump and numerous far-right conspiracists.
Additionally, Musk has promoted the so-called Twitter Files on his new platform. Musk claimed that the collection of internal documents would disclose a censorship scandal. Still, the so-called Twitter Files instead exposed messy internal discussions on difficult topics more than anything else.
