What You Need To Know After Jif Peanut Butter Recall Following Salmonella Outbreak

Several states have been affected by an outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to certain peanut butter products produced by JIF.

A CDC and FDA investigation is underway. This product is believed to come from the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky.

In all, 5 out of 5 people consumed peanut butter before becoming ill, and 4 of those 5 specifically reported eating JIF brand peanut butter.

States across the country have reported 14 illnesses.

There have been no deaths reported, but two people have been hospitalized.

What Exactly is the Bacteria Known as Salmonella?

A group of bacteria called Salmonella can cause gastroenteritis, fever, and gastrointestinal distress.

Within 12 to 72 hours after being infected with Salmonella, most people begin to experience symptoms.

In most cases, the illness lasts four to seven days, and people recover without treatment.

Diarrhoea, fever, and cramps are among the symptoms.

Salmonellosis may be more severe when it causes a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, rash, and blood in the urine and stool.

The elderly, children under the age of five, and people with weak immune systems are at greater risk of developing severe salmonellosis infections.

Peanut butter with lot codes 1274425 through 2140425, or if the first seven digits end with 425, should not be consumed, sold, or served. It is recommended that consumers check any peanut butter they own that has a shelf life of more than two years.

The peanut butter that has been recalled should be washed and sanitized after contact with surfaces and utensils. You should consult your doctor if someone in your home ate the peanut butter and developed symptoms after eating it.
