Abbott Nutrition issued a recall for three of its newborn formulae on Thursday after four babies were hospitalized with bacterial illnesses after consuming the company’s products.
According to USA Today, the recall is for certain lots of the company’s Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare formulas made at its Sturgis, Mich., factory.
The announcement comes after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to customers on Thursday, advising them not to use certain powdered infant formula products made at the plant.
The FDA said it was looking into accusations that four infants in three states had been infected with Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport after consuming powdered infant formula made at the plant.
The FDA stated in the report that “all four instances associated to these complaints were hospitalized, and Cronobacter may have contributed to a fatality in one case.”
The FDA also announced that an onsite inspection of the plant had begun.
“The FDA is profoundly concerned about these reports of bacterial infections because this is a product that is utilized as the primary source of sustenance for many of our nation’s newborns and infants,” FDA Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response Frank Yiannas said in a statement.
“While we seek to remedy this safety concern as swiftly as possible, we want to reassure the public that we’re working carefully with our partners to investigate complaints linked to these goods, which we realize include infant formula produced at this plant,” Yiannas stated.
According to the FDA, the inquiry is being assisted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as state and local partners.
