Career
Counting Crows was formed by Adam Duritz and David Bryson in 1991. It’s safe to say that the band plays rock music. However, they’ve also been labeled as alternative, pop, and “jangle rock.”
After Duritz and the others approached Geffen Records with their mixtape, they were highly sought after, with other record companies vying to sign them. Counting Crows signed a contract with Geffen that was said to be quite lucrative for the band. Because of the transaction’s success, the press began calling them “Accounting Crows.”
Instantly after the release of their first album, “August and Everything After,” Counting Crows found themselves at the forefront of the music industry. In Canada specifically, the song “Mr. Jones” skyrocketed to the top of the charts.
After appearing on “Saturday Night Live,” the band’s reputation skyrocketed, and their album “August and Everything After” eventually went 7x platinum.
When the band returned from their tour in 1995, they recorded a new album, “Recovering the Satellites.” Adam Duritz did much of the album’s writing, which was just as successful as Counting Crows’ first. After then, there were more tours, and in 1999, they even played at Woodstock.
Many of their songs had already been used in films at this time. A nomination for an Academy Award was given to them in 2004 for their music “Accidentally in Love,” which was used in the movie “Shrek 2.”

In 2013, they released a new album, “Somewhere Under Wonderland,” after a string of self-releases. Adam Duritz said in 2019 that he had resumed songwriting for the band and that several albums will be made available as extended plays.
Adam has worked with a wide variety of musicians as a solo artist. His contributions may be heard on The Wallflowers’ album “Bringing Down the Horse.” In addition, he collaborated with Peter Stuart on albums such as “Propeller” and “Daisy.” Duritz’s resume also includes stints with acts like Dashboard Confessional and Josie and the Pussycats. The Maria Taylor song “Waiting in Line” also includes him.
