C.J. Snare Dies At The Age Of 64
The hair metal legend C.J. Snare, who led FireHouse for over thirty years, taking on lead vocals and keyboard duties on each of the band’s eight albums, passed away “unexpectedly” on Friday night, the hard rock group announced. He was sixty-four.
On Facebook, the group posted that Snare’s passing had left them in “complete shock.” They referred to Snare as a “rock and roll warrior” and “arguably one of the best vocal talents of a generation,” saying, “Today is a sad day for Rock N Roll.”
The band clarified in a Sunday post “As you are all aware, CJ was expected to be back on stage with the band this summer after recovering from surgery. We are all in complete shock with CJ’s untimely passing.”
The band did not release a cause of death, but Snare’s daughter informed that he passed away following a protracted fight with cancer. She stated that his official cause of death was cardiac arrest.
In 1984, Snare, drummer Michael Foster, bassist Perry Richardson, and guitarist Bill Leverty formed FireHouse in Richmond, Virginia. After being signed by Epic Records in 1989, the band shot to fame in 1990 with their self-titled first album, which went double platinum and sold over two million copies.
The group had a string of breakthrough singles in the early 1990s, including three Top 20 hits on the Billboard chart: “When I Look Into Your Eyes” in 1992, “Don’t Treat Me Bad” in 1991, and “Love of a Lifetime” in 1992.
Snare’s eight-year partner Katherine Little said on social media on Sunday that he received a stage IV colon cancer diagnosis in September 2020. She said, “His initial prognosis was grim, but that didn’t stop him.”
She remarked, “He was so incredibly positive throughout this whole disease. He was so strong. He never lost hope. All he wanted was to be the CJ that you all know and love.”
Snare stated at the end of last month that he was “Feeling Stronger every day, I’ll be back on stage with FireHouse before you know it,” he promised his followers on Instagram. “Health is first so making a FULL recovery before my return.”
Bill Leverty expressed on Facebook early on Sunday morning that Snare’s passing had “absolutely devastated” him. He wrote a few hours later, saying he was “still in shock” over the revelation.
The guitarist wrote, “I’m trying to focus on the many great memories with him from over the decades of making music together, traveling the world, and hanging out telling jokes. We went through so much together on and off the stage, in the studio, on the bus, in the van, in the airport, in the dressing room, in the hotel, and on and on.”
On Sunday, other greats of the hard rock scene honored Snare. Lead singer of Night Ranger Jack Blades recalled working and touring with them as having “many wonderful memories.”
He stated, “CJ‘s sweet soul and great smile always brightened up the day no matter what was happening. And that golden voice… Blessings CJ & sing it loud in the stars my brother.”
