Denis Villeneuve’s career has surged since he directed “Enemy.” Besides “Dune,” he’s previously worked on “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and the sequel to “Blade Runner 2049.” When Villeneuve’s film “Enemy” was released, he was still a lesser-known name, and moviegoers had no idea what to anticipate from his distinct take on genre filmmaking.
However, it is evident that Villeneuve has a definite vision for the style and feel of his films, even in “Enemy”. The ending of this film, which was partially based on José Saramago’s short story “The Double,” would leave even the most devoted viewers baffled.

Enemy Storyline
Naked woman on edge of crushing tarantula under platform high-heel in s*xual show at an underground club attended by a man Adam Bell, a professor of history at the University of Toronto, leads a solitary existence in Toronto. He watches the movie Where There’s a Will There’s a Way on the advice of a coworker and recognizes an actor who briefly appears in the film as a bellhop and looks strikingly like himself. Adam recognizes the actor as Anthony Claire, better known by his stage name, Daniel Saint Claire, after searching the internet.
Adam becomes enamored with the man who looks to be his physical twin in the other two films in which he appeared. It wasn’t long until Adam discovered a photo of someone who looked like him, with the woman’s hand resting on his shoulder, in a box at his house. But a section of the photo has been cut out, making it impossible to identify the woman in question.
In an attempt to find out more about Anthony, Adam goes to his talent agency and poses as the actor, only to be granted a letter of confidentiality. Finding Anthony’s Mississauga apartment, Adam tries to call the residence, but he is instead put through to Anthony’s pregnant wife, Helen. She also thinks Adam’s voice sounds like Anthony’s, but Adam claims he is not. Helen is startled, and Adam cuts the call short.
The next time Adam phones, Anthony assumes he’s a stalker and orders him to stop. When Helen confronts Anthony, he denies knowing anything about the phone call or Adam’s existence. Helen does some research on Adam and discovers that he teaches at the college where he works. Even though Adam has no idea who Helen is, his striking resemblance to her late spouse stuns her.
They meet in a hotel room, where Anthony discovers that Adam has the same scar as he does, and the two of them are completely indistinguishable. Adam is taken aback by Anthony’s outspoken nature and quickly leaves the meeting. Dreams of a naked woman with a spider’s head, and then of a big skyscraper-sized spider roaming through the city’s buildings, begin to occur for the two guys.
Day two finds Anthony pursuing Adam. His attention is drawn to Adam’s girlfriend Mary. Using Anthony’s strategy to embarrass and manipulate Adam into allowing him to sleep with Mary in order to “get even,” Adam will be accused of having an affair with his wife. In exchange for Adam’s clothes and car keys, he offers to vanish from the world forever. Adam agrees to the terms of the agreement. When Anthony pretends to be him, he takes Mary to her hotel room in his charade.
Anthony’s flat is open to Adam in revenge, so he enters the building. In a desperate plea, the building’s concierge urges ‘Anthony’ to take him back to the s*x club in the basement of the building. This is the same photo that Adam found in his own house, but this time it is intact, and the woman is revealed to be Helen. Adam discovers this at the apartment. Despite Adam’s best efforts, Helen appears to be able to tell the difference between him and Anthony.
In order to get him to cuddle with her, she pretends she doesn’t notice. That night, Helen finds Adam crying and apologizing when she wakes up, but later that night, she has a s*xual encounter with him and informs him that he is her preferred partner. Mary panics during s*x when she finds the wedding ring mark on Anthony’s finger and inquires as to his identity. As far as Anthony is concerned, he’s had the mark since he can remember. They get into a disagreement in the automobile, which leads to the car crashing at high speed, resulting in the death of both parties.
Adam wears Anthony’s clothes the next day and finally reads the confidential letter he received the day before from Anthony. Only a select few members are permitted access to the underground s*x club, which he discovers. He makes up his mind to go, and he tells Helen that he’s leaving, but she doesn’t say anything. Instead of Helen, he finds a room-sized tarantula cowering against the back wall of the bedroom. Adam sighs with a look of resignation.
Enemy Ending Explained
Adam finds himself thrust into Anthony’s life as the former decides to take advantage of the latter’s doppelganger for his own gain. Men can’t act like each other, and their female victims can see right through their ruses. When Helen sees the wedding ring imprint on Anthony’s finger, she immediately realizes that the man treating her with respect and love is not her husband, but rather his doppelganger.
Because Jake Gyllenhaal plays a villain in one of the two roles, Mary and Anthony’s quarrel about his identity culminates in a vehicle accident that probably kills them both. Incredibly, Helen seems to accept Adam’s replacement, but Adam’s last-minute decision to attend Anthony’s favorite gay bar is a complete shock.
Enemy’s identity is put into question when he sees the same portrait that he owns in Anthony’s house, but the most stunning incident occurs at the end. After assuring Helen he wouldn’t be home that night, he goes to check on her and discovers that she has turned into a gigantic spider. A sudden and surprising creative choice, it actually relates to the film’s deeper themes and concepts. It’s an abrupt and unexpected choice.
