Honey Alexander: Who Was She?

The then-Senator and First Lady moved to Music City in August 1970 with their infant son. Honey served as First Lady of Tennessee from 1979 through 1987. It was her job as the first lady to oversee a statewide program called the Healthy Children Initiative, the goal of which was to guarantee that all pregnant women in the state had access to quality medical care.

The ex-first lady was active in a number of organizations during her time as the first lady, including the Southern Regional Task Force on Infant Mortality in 1985–1986, the Governor’s Task Forces on Day Care and Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse, and the Council on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.

Honey co-founded Leadership Nashville in 1976 with the goal of increasing the range and diversity of the city’s decision-makers. The former first lady supported her husband, the late Senator Lamar Alexander, in his six campaigns for governor and the United States Senate. When the senator first moved to Knoxville, Lamar was president of the University of Tennessee.

Later, during her eight years as First Lady, she lived in Washington, DC, where Lamar was the vice president. Honey Alexander is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lamar Alexander; their three children; and nine grandchildren; in addition to her brother and sisters. The Alexander family has announced that a private interment service would be held at the Hesse Creek Chapel family cemetery in Walland, Tennessee.

A memorial service will be held at Nashville’s Christ Church Cathedral later. There were no immediate announcements on the times of either service. In lieu of flowers, the Alexander family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Honey Alexander Center at 2400 Clifton Avenue in Nashville.
