“More Than My Hometown” singer opened up to PEOPLE on being a single dad, co-parenting “difficulties” with ex-KT Smith, and more.
The East Tennessee native told the publication that despite initial co-parenting “difficulties,” he and Smith are now focused on their 6-month-old son, Indigo Wilder Wallen. Wallen says he is “happy, healthy, and incredible” and that he is “in our life now.”
Wallen and Smith were engaged for three years before calling it quits in 2019. Since their divorce, the couple has worked through their co-parenting difficulties and is doing their best for baby Indie.
The musician also claims he is “grateful” to have a son with someone he loves and that they are “trying to sort things out” and “doing the best we can with the situation”. There are clearly many people who have been in this scenario before, but knowing that doesn’t make it any easier.”
The superstar never envisioned becoming a single father to his baby, as he wished for a family like his own, who reared him and his sisters together.
Being a single dad “is absolutely not how I envisaged parenthood,” he admitted. I wished to be like my parents. My parents are still married. They reared us (myself and my sisters). That’s how I imagined my life. Obviously, that didn’t happen. And I was a little surprised when I found out.”
He promised his son when he was born that he would be the dad Indie deserves, but he admits he was “a little terrified” and “didn’t know what being a parent would feel like.”
But now, he reveals that being a dad is “the coolest damn feeling, and I’m ready for whatever God has planned for me and my little guy.”
Wallen has learned from his parents, Tommy and Lesli, who came from Knoxville to help him. And even though he doesn’t consider himself “an expert by any means,” he is doing his best to co-parent his adorable son and says that now that Indie is of age to go between two houses, his house looks a lot like a baby lives there.
“KT’s worked with me throughout the whole time, so I’ve been able to see him a lot since he was born,” Wallen added. “So if you walk in my house now, you think a baby lives here.”
