Since then, she has been in other successful musicals, including Funny Girl, Bells Are Ringing, Damn Yankees, and more. Aside from appearing in films like Something Wild, Up the Down Staircase, and Klute, she made her cinematic debut in the 1958 film adaption of Damn Yankees.

All in the Family and Beyond

From 1971 until 1979, Jean Stapleton was a mainstay on CBS’s hit sitcom All in the Family, playing the part of Edith Bunker. Carroll O’Connor played the role of working-class conservative and bigot Archie Bunker, while Stapleton played the role of his faithful and caring wife. Norman Lear was the showrunner.

The show was lauded for its impact, realism, and comedy as it tackled socially charged topics like abortion, racism, sexism, and homosexuality. Stapleton received three Emmys and two Golden Globes for her portrayal of Edith, which was highly praised.

In 1982’s television film Eleanor, First Lady of the World, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
