Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie, announced their separation on Wednesday, seemingly ending their 18-year public marriage. The pair had previously discussed their relationship’s challenges openly and had been seldom seen together in public during the preceding several years.
Trudeau, now 51, married 48-year-old Sophie Gregoire Trudeau in May 2005; the couple now has three children, ages 15, 14, and 9. In 2020, he will celebrate their anniversary by calling her “my rock, my partner, and my best friend.”
There are sad historical connections for Trudeau as well. His father, Pierre Trudeau, was Prime Minister when he and his wife, Margaret, divorced in 1977. Considering how frequently he talks about family values, this is one of Trudeau’s most significant personal problems since he became prime minister in 2015.
A week after Trudeau disclosed a big cabinet move to improve the prospects of his Liberal Party, which is losing in the polls, the pair made the news. His advisors said he was set on leading the Liberals into the next election, which was mandated for October 2025.
“Sophie and I would like to share that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have decided to separate,” Trudeau said on Instagram. Gregoire Trudeau published an Instagram post with almost the exact wording.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, one of Trudeau’s closest friends, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, will inform cabinet colleagues later on Wednesday. The CBC also reported that Trudeau will most likely make a public statement regarding the split this week.
According to Trudeau’s office, the couple has signed a legally binding agreement emphasizing their priority of raising their children. Next week, the whole family is taking off for a much-needed vacation.
A source close to the matter has revealed that Gregoire Trudeau will be relocating to a different property in Ottawa. At the same time, he still intends to spend a great deal of time with the kids at the prime minister’s official residence, Rideau Cottage.
Due to the extraordinary sensitivity of the case, the source spoke on condition of anonymity but confirmed that the couple would share custody of their children. Advocate for gender equality and university business major Gregoire Trudeau met Trudeau in 2003 while both were reporters. They tied the knot two years later.
Trudeau, then 43 years old, became prime minister in late 2015, and he and his wife, who always look impeccable, rapidly became the media’s focus. In October 2015, the New York Post called her “the hottest first lady in the world.”
The January 2016 edition of Vogue included a flattering profile of the couple with images of them holding hands. Trudeau “shocks some with his public displays of affection toward his wife,” the magazine said in a lengthy profile of the prime minister.

During Trudeau’s first few years in government, he and Sophie often attended events and traveled abroad together. During their February 2018 trip to India, the pair dressed in elaborate costumes on most days, drawing jokes from friends and family back home.
However, in his memoirs Common Ground in 2014, Trudeau made it apparent that the couple had struggled, admitting, “Our marriage isn’t perfect, and we have had difficult ups and downs.”
Gregoire Trudeau has shown symptoms of stress in recent years, including a reduction in combined public appearances with her husband.
After a year of marriage, she said on social media, “We have navigated through sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between, and it ain’t over.”

She said, “There are so many ways in which long-term relationships are difficult.”
They went to London together in May for King Charles’ coronation and were also seen in late March with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. On Monday, Trudeau was still wearing the wedding band he had worn since his wedding.
