Montero Lamar Hill (born April 9, 1999) is an American rapper and vocalist who goes by the stage name Lil Nas X (/NZ/ NAHZ). He rocketed to stardom with the release of his country rap tune “Old Town Road,” which went viral in early 2019 before topping worldwide music charts and earning diamond certified by November of the same year.
“Old Town Road” topped the Billboard Hot 100 list for 19 weeks, making it the longest-running number-one single since the category’s inception in 1958.
The song has been remixed many times, the most known of which features country artist Billy Ray Cyrus. Lil Nas X came out as homosexual when his song “Old Town Road” was at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making him the first and only artist to do so while having a number-one single.
Following the success of “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X released his first extended play, 7, which yielded two more songs, “Panini” (with Cardi B or Nas) reaching at number five on the Hot 100 and “Rodeo” (containing Cardi B or Nas) peaking at number 22. The chart-topping songs “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” (featuring Jack Harlow) as well as the top-ten hit “That’s What I Want” accompanied his first studio album, Montero (2021).
At the 62nd Annual Grammy Accolades, Lil Nas X was the most nominated male artist, winning awards for Best Music Video and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Lil Nas X is the first openly LGBT Black musician to receive a Country Music Association award for his song “Old Town Road,” which won him two MTV Video Music Awards, including Song of the Year and the American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Song.
In 2019, he was designated one of the 25 most important people on the Internet by Time, and in 2020, he was included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

According to a New York Magazine investigation, he allegedly established and controlled Nicki Minaj fan accounts on Twitter, including one dubbed “@NasMaraj.”
This account acquired notoriety in 2017 for its interactive “scenario threads” in the form of flash fiction, which were promoted on Twitter using the dashboard program TweetDeck.
The inquiry tied @NasMaraj to the practice of “Tweetdecking,” or the use of many accounts in tandem to make particular tweets become popular artificially. Twitter suspended the @NasMaraj account for “violating spam regulations.”
New York Magazine’s research found that after the suspension of @NasMaraj, he created a new account with the name “@NasMarai,” and that his current Twitter account at the time was a repurposed version of the “@NasMarai” account with a different handle.
After media reports tied Lil Nas X to the Minaj fan accounts, he labeled the accusations a “mistake,” clearly denying that he was the one behind the accounts. Lil Nas X, on the other hand, claimed to be a fan of Minaj in a tweet in May 2020.
He stated why he first denied it, claiming that people would believe he was homosexual if they knew he was a fan of hers: “If you have a whole fan page devoted to Nicki, people would assume you’re gay. Moreover, the rap/music business is not yet developed or welcoming of homosexual males “..
On June 17, 2020, Minaj retweeted Nas and said: “It hurt a little when you denied being a troll, but I get it. Congratulations for gaining the courage to express your mind “..
“Felt so awful, praying u wouldn’t notice my denial,” Lil Nas apologized to Minaj. Later, the fact that he was the owner of the account with the handle @NasMaraj was seemingly confirmed in a New York Times Magazine article, and further confirmed when he is seen tweeting from the account while in high school in the music video for “Sun Goes Down,” which depicts Lil Nas X’s many struggles growing up as a closeted teen and embracing his sexuality.
Lil Nas X decided to pursue music as a career choice in 2018 and began creating and recording songs in his closet
He changed his name to Lil Nas X, a nod to the artist Nas. Nasarati, Lil Nas’ debut mixtape, was published on SoundCloud on July 24, 2018, however, it did not get quick acclaim; Nasarati was withdrawn from streaming sites shortly after the release of Old Town Road owing to a copyright disagreement, and so never gained major popularity.
He heard the rhythm that would become “Old Town Road” in late October 2018.

Lil Nas X came out to his sister and father in early June 2019, believing that “the cosmos was signaling him to do so,” despite his doubts about whether his fans would support him.
Lil Nas X came out as homosexual publicly on June 30, 2019, the final day of Pride Month, tweeting: “Some of you already know, some of you don’t care, and some of you aren’t willing to [fuck with me] anymore.
But before the month is over, I want you to pay attention to c7osure.” When he originally hinted at this in his tune “c7osure,” the tweet validated prior assumptions. The song “touches on topics such as coming honest, growing up, and accepting one’s self,” according to Rolling Stone.
He tweeted again the following day, this time pointing out the rainbow-colored structure on his EP 7’s cover image with the remark “deadass thought I made it apparent.”
In a BBC Breakfast interview a few days later, he said unequivocally that he is homosexual and recognizes that his sexuality is not well accepted in the country and rap music circles. The announcement drew generally favorable reactions, but it also sparked a lot of homophobic abuse on social media, which Lil Nas X responded to.
The response came from the hip-hop community as well, highlighting homophobia in the culture. Pastor Troy made homophobic remarks about Lil Nas X’s Grammy Awards costume in January 2020, to which Lil Nas X replied, “Damn I look amazing in that photo on god.”
In September 2021, Lil Nas X said that he was formerly an atheist but is now “a highly spiritual guy in terms of the Universe, how everything works.”

Lil Nas X has been praised for his public appearances, with Vogue describing him as a “master” at glamming up the cowboy style in his appearances and on Instagram in July 2019. Hodo Musa, his stylist, describes his style as “energetic, fun, bright, and futuristic.”
He donned a cherry-red Nudie suit with a cowboy pattern for his onstage appearance at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. Wrangler has constantly sold out of Lil Nas X co-branded clothes, which is highlighted in the “Old Town Road” lyrics.
Lil Nas X donned numerous ensembles at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, including a head-to-toe couture fuchsia Versace suit with a pink harness that took 700 hours to make.

In August 2021, Lil Nas X remarked on an Instagram post about Tony Hawk selling skateboards painted with his blood, “Nah he tweaking.” For the following three days, it became a viral sensation.
In 2021, he was included in Time’s annual list of the world’s 100 most powerful people, the Time 100.
