Mare of Easttown, starring Kate Winslet, instantly became a sensation when it premiered on HBO in April 2021, and fans have been clamoring for more ever since.
It hasn’t discouraged viewers from wanting more of the bleak Philadelphia suburb, even though it was advertised as a limited series (meaning a ‘one and done’ season style.).
On May 30, WarnerMedia proudly stated that the finale had become the most-watched episode of any HBO or HBO Max series in its first 24 hours of airing. On Sunday night, three million people tuned in to find out who had murdered Erin and why (according to Deadline); another four million people watched on HBO Max throughout the weekend.
For the first time since Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant’s The Undoing, every episode brought in more viewers than the previous one.
It’s not out of the question that season two will be a success. However, nothing has been revealed as of December 2021.
So, how likely is it, realistically?
Mare of Easttown Season 2 Coming Or Not?
Why Mare was brought back for a second inquiry is a mystery to us at this time. Because the show was meant to be a one-seasoner, we shouldn’t expect to see her again. Networks have, in the past, reversed course after a hugely successful series.
Big Little Lies, for example, was only meant to be a one-off, but the show’s success compelled the network and its writers to continue the series. There have been rumblings regarding a third season ever since, showing how eager fans are to see how season two’s events play out. Winslet has been open about her wish to reprise her role as Mare of Easttown.
Speaking to TVLine ahead of the series finale, she said”I would absolutely love to play Mare again. I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role.
“There’s something very addictive about Mare because she’s so outrageous and loveable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her.”
Adding fuel to the fire, HBO president Casey Bloys hinted in June that the show’s creators could be open to producing more Mare of Easttown.
“If Brad [Inglesby, writer] felt like he had a story to tell that felt like it would be at the same level, I think everybody would be open to it,” he told Variety.
“Right now, he doesn’t have that story. Who knows? We’ll have to wait to see if they come up with something they’re dying to tell.”
When asked by Hollywood Reporter about whether or not there was more to the story, creator Brad Inglesby expressed skepticism.
“It was written as a limited, and it ends. There’s no more mystery to be solved,” he said.
“Kate and I, if we could crack a story that we were really proud of and felt like it was a deserving second chapter in Mare’s journey, then maybe. I haven’t cracked that yet; I don’t know what that is, honestly.
“But if there was a world in which we were convinced this is a continuation of the story that honors the first chapter and does things an audience will appreciate, then maybe. But as of right now, I have no idea what that could be.”

Mare of Easttown Season 2 Plotline
Leaving Mare in the apartment where her son Kevin committed himself for the first time since his death may be a viable option.
Another option exists for reuniting with her once the dust settles.
Towards the beginning of the series, Mare appeared to be a very different person from the one we saw at the end of the series. Untapped trauma had been brought to the surface by the protagonist’s therapy. As our conversations progressed, her initial apprehension about going there melted away.
Instead of continuing to rage against the unacceptable at every opportunity, boxed down by her own grief, Mare was evolving into a new kind of person. As a result of her transition, new facets of her character developed, adding intrigue to the mystery at the centre of the storey.
Even without the murder of Erin McMenamin, there would have been countless additional plots that would have led to Ryan Ross’s identification by his parents Lori and John Ross as their killer. When we first saw Mare of Easttown, viewers were immediately drawn into the detective’s journey (and her absolute lack of cooking skills—cheese in a can, anyone?), which made the murder investigation all the more compelling.
In addition, there would be no objections if Jean Smart were given the opportunity to reprise her role as Helen, Mare’s Fruit Ninja-obsessed mother. A Jean spin-off is something we’d gladly pay money for, but that’s a discussion for another day.
Season two would, of course, introduce a new crime that would spread across the Easttown neighbourhood, bringing with it a new group of residents with their own set of secrets.
Michaela Coel and I May Destroy You and Fleabag are two examples of successful creators who choose to put pen to paper and walk away.
In theory, further seasons may have surpassed their predecessors, but Coel and Waller-Bridge had exhausted their supply of plots and characters by the end of the third season of the show. It would have been dishonest for them to re-enter the fray if they had decided to do so based only on the demands of the public and the media, rather than their own desire to tell a specific storey.
Many viewers felt that Big Little Lies’ second season fell short of its first, and while the accolades for the show’s actors and producers will never be taken away, the show’s lustre dimmed.
And since Inglesby is so anxious that everything must be just right, we can be sure that if and when we do see Mare again, it will be quite the spectacle.
