Mike Enriquez was the voice of the GMA Network on Philippine television and radio. He also served as the company’s radio operations consultant. During his career at GMA, the anchor filled a number of different responsibilities.
According to CNN, he oversaw operations at Super Radyo DZBB 594 AM in addition to his role as president of the network’s regional and radio affiliate, RGMA Network Inc. Mike Enriquez has a long history of medical problems.
According to CNN Philippines, in 2018 the GMA host revealed that he had been treated for renal ailment and underwent a heart bypass. Before his kidney transplant in December 2021, he had to undergo dialysis three to four times a week, thus he had to take time off work.
According to ZGR Network, Mike’s seclusion time after surgery lasted three months. In March of 2022, he returned to GMA to cover the upcoming elections, however, he was forced to resign three months later due to health issues.
Mike Enriquez Dies After Long Illness
Veteran broadcaster and one of the Philippines’ most renowned journalists Mike Enriquez passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71.

Enriquez has been sick since 2018 when he took time off to get a heart bypass and treat his renal illness. He went on medical leave again in 2021 to have a transplant, but he was back on the air for election coverage the following year.

He was a mainstay in the Philippine media scene and a co-host of GMA’s 24-hour newscast, 24 Oras. Along with that, he was the presenter of the network’s documentary series Imbestigador. He was the senior vice president of GMA’s radio operations and the host of many radio programs.
The network said that he “joined the broadcast industry in 1969 and then became part of GMA Network in 1995, wholeheartedly serving the Filipino audience for 54 years.” His commitment to the field is an example to others. May our dear Kapuso rest in peace forever.

His longtime co-anchor Mel Tiangco, who delivered the news on their program 24 Oras while fighting back emotions, was among many who conveyed their sympathies to Enriquez’s family and friends. Arnold Clavio, Nelson Canlas, and Connie Season, all of whom work in broadcasting, all rushed to social media to offer their condolences.
Award-Winning Journalist
Awards in journalism are nothing new for Enriquez. Recently, he has won accolades from the Gawad Lasallianeta accolades for Most Outstanding Male News Anchor in 2022 and the 23rd Annual Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Awards for Most Trusted Radio Presenter.
The 2015 feature published by Philstar.com on Enriquez highlighted his many accomplishments, including his 1999 Golden Dove Award for Best Male Newscaster and 1999 Ka Doroy Valencia Broadcaster of the Year Awards.
In 1999, Enriquez won the award for “Best Newscaster” at the Asian Television Awards in Singapore. A documentary he made on war-torn Iraq won him a Silver Camera Award at the 2004 US Film and Video Festival in Hollywood, and he won a gold medal at the 2003 New York Festival for Saksi.
Enriquez, when asked by Philstar about what it takes to work in broadcasting, said, “My program requires preparation because it’s talk and news.” You should be well-informed, not because you care about making a good impression, but because your listeners deserve nothing less. They put their faith and confidence in you, thus it is your responsibility to be ready for everything.
