Mike Williams, a former NFL wide receiver, had his cause of death disclosed by authorities. Williams reportedly passed away in the days following his removal from life support due to problems stemming from an uncommon bacterial infection, as confirmed by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office, following an accident at work in late August.
At the age of 36, the former Buccaneers wide receiver passed away on September 12th. Williams was hurt in a head injury at the end of summer while working for Tampa-based contractor Exodus Electric Corp.
Death was attributed to “bacterial sepsis with cerebral abscesses and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to multiple dental caries and retained dental roots,” according to the first case summary report. One of the factors that contributed to Williams’ dying was arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
We are still awaiting the complete toxicology report and autopsy results. The reports state that Williams’ next of kin stated that he regularly used Kratom, a legal herbal supplement. The documents showed that Williams died of natural causes and that there was no sign of foul play.
Williams’ loved ones were worried that hospital visitors were bringing him illegal narcotics, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times. The outlet stated that an investigation into Williams’ death had been dropped by Tampa police after they had initially launched an investigation.
Acute hypoxic respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, sepsis owing to numerous brain abscesses, and cardiac arrest were among Williams’ symptoms upon admission to the intensive care unit the day following the industrial accident.
On September 1st, he had a heart arrest and was put to sleep after receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Transferred to hospice care on September 7th, Williams passed away five days later.
Williams played for the Buccaneers from 2010 to 2013, after being picked in 2010 out of Syracuse. In his debut year, he scored 11 touchdowns. In 2014, he was dealt to the Bills, his hometown team.
He remained with the Chiefs for one more season in 2016, but he didn’t appear in a single game that year. Throughout his time in the NFL, he caught 223 passes for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns.
