Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2 Storyline
The death of Henry Scarlet, the father of Eliza Scarlet, leaves Eliza Scarlet very bankrupt in Victorian London (1882). However, despite the apparent lack of other options, Eliza decides to continue her father’s detective agency by herself, using his name as a cover.
Her old friend William Wellington (Duke), a gruff, womanizing Detective Inspector of Scotland Yard, frequently helps her acquire cases, but this rarely succeeds. She struggles to build her reputation in the male-dominated world of crime-solving. Either that or she’ll take case files from his office. The term “The Duke” refers to the Duke of Wellington, and William is known as “The Duke” in the police department.
When William was a child, Eliza’s late father Henry rescued him from the streets of London and later mentored him as a police officer. A chaste kiss was shared by William and Eliza when they were teenagers. Henry was a hero to William because he was an upright and decent man. In spite of William’s initial displeasure with Eliza’s detective ambitions, he grows to appreciate her abilities as time goes on.
When Eliza Scarlet has her heart set on something, she doesn’t give up. Series writer and creator Rachael New took inspiration for the character from Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice) and Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind. Born into a middle-class family, Eliza uses her appearance as a refined Victorian lady to her advantage when working on cases.
But underneath Eliza is scrappy and feisty, much to many people’s surprise, which works in her favor. William and Eliza work on numerous cases together, though she is uncredited, causing disputes between them. Moses, a known criminal, is hired by Eliza, much to William’s displeasure. Moses is amused by Eliza’s gumption and they connect as outsiders to society.
Eliza befriends Rupert Parker, a wealthy man who loans her money for her agency as an investment. Mrs. Parker’s son Rupert, who owns Eliza’s house, is a bachelor (and a closet gay man) who seeks counsel from Eliza on how to negotiate his personal life. Eliza lives with Ivy, who cooks for her and cared for her after Eliza’s mother died. (sometime before the series begins). Their continual arguing and bickering are punctuated by moments of flirting and tenderness.

Conclusion
Eliza and the Duke have their own issues to deal with, of course. Eliza’s reluctance to learn how to cook is one of the season’s best one-on-ones, as Duke is the only one who has mastered the basics of the kitchen. Prior to today, keeping ourselves alive was a full-time job, and shows such as this rarely remind audiences of this.
