Montana Considers Lake County Landfill Expansion
A draft environmental assessment for the proposed expansion of the Lake County Landfill in Polson, Montana, has been released by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
According to the Montana Environmental Policy Act, the review examined the proposal’s possible effects. After receiving feedback from the public on the evaluation, the agency will decide whether to approve the expansion application or not.
About 50 acres of land at 3500 Kerr Dam Road, south of the Lake County Landfill, which is currently in operation, are included in the project. The site would be accessed from the main entrance by a private drive. Only 19 of the 50 acres have been allocated for active landfilling activities.
It is anticipated that the current landfill will be filled up in January 2026. Only Groups III and IV garbage, such as inert waste like tires, concrete, clean timber, and building and demolition waste, are now accepted at the dump.
By accepting Group II waste, which includes domestic garbage, the expansion will remove the need to carry this waste to Missoula, Montana, for ultimate disposal.
