While teaching at a school in London’s East End, Poitier portrays an idealistic teacher. Based on E. R. Braithwaite’s 1959 autobiographical book, this dramatic film is all about the teacher-student relationship at a school that is both unexpected and untamed. Amazon Prime Video has the movie for rent.

In the Heat of the Night (Streaming on Cinemax, Pluto TV, Roku Channel)

“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” a 1967 comedy-drama directed by Stanley Kramer and starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, is one of Sidney Poitier’s most beloved films. Prentice is a widower who falls in love with Hepburn’s character while vacationing in Hawaii. Poitier plays him. While Joanna Drayton, played by Audrey Hepburn, invites Dr. John back to San Francisco to meet her family, the reaction is mixed. “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was banned in 17 states after its first release due to its depiction of an interracial marriage. With the Starz add-on feature, the film is now available to watch on Starz and Prime Video.

In 1963, Ralph Nelson’s comedy-drama “Lilies of the Field” made history by becoming the first black actor to receive an Academy Award for Best Actor. Only Hattie McDaniel, the Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner for “Gone with the Wind,” had won an acting Oscar before Poitier. As an itinerant labourer, Poitier takes on the role of an East German nun who believes he has been sent by God to construct their new chapel. Sidney Poitier plays jazz saxophonist Eddie Cook, and Paul Newman plays trombone player Ram Bowen in Martin Ritt’s 1961 musical romance “Paris Blues.” Diahann Carroll and Joanne Woodward portray two vacationing American ladies who fall for these two music musicians. Tubi has now made the film accessible for free online viewing.

The Organization (Stream for free on Tubi)

Don Medford’s 1971 crime film “The Organization” featured Sidney Poitier as detective Virgil Tibbs for a third time. This third book in the Tibbs trilogy takes place in San Francisco, where the detective is once again on the quest for a band of revolutionaries who are on the loose and committing crimes all over the city. Sheree North, Gerald S. O’Laughlin, and Raul Julia round out the cast. Tubi has made the movie available for free viewing.
