For the misfits of Nevermore Academy, like Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), life is anything but boring. After nearly killing a few careless boys at her former school, Wednesday arrives. She is thrown into the expanding mystery of several deaths around the school neighbourhood that have been going on for a few weeks and perplexing the local sheriff.
After witnessing the strange monster kill a person in the woods on her first night at Nevermore, Wednesday, never one to turn away from her inherent curiosity and urge to prove she is better than everyone else, she starts looking into this mystery. Sadly, no one accepts her version of events or the identity of the horrifying criminal, especially since the student returns the next day.
Throughout the season, Wednesday gets closer to figuring out the monster and why it is allegedly killing a haphazard mix of outcasts and normies. The danger to her life grows as she proceeds, becoming more sinister as she learns the truth. What exactly is the deadly and enigmatic Hyde, and who was the monster revealed to be?
How Does Hyde Work?
In this world full of the paranormal, the big-eyed, giant creature with fantastic speed and razor-sharp claws is rare. It’s an uncommon monster that doesn’t typically hang out with sirens, werewolves, or other fabled creatures. The lack of concrete evidence that anyone attended Nevermore makes Wednesday’s quest for information much more challenging as the killings continue and the necessity to slay the monster grows more pressing by the day.

Despite the lack of knowledge, Wednesday discovers much about the beast and what makes it such a massive menace. Wednesday finds some crucial information regarding Hyde and its operations while conducting her research. A Hyde is a monster born, but it doesn’t guarantee the child will always turn into a Hyde. It must be released or unlocked, usually due to a traumatic occurrence.
A master, who assists the monster in showing up for service and has authority over it, also rules over Hyde. Therefore, someone else is in charge of the beast running about and killing people, and it’s possible that person isn’t even aware that they are the monster. This raises more issues while also explaining the monster’s carelessness and danger. Who was the discoverer, and why was this group of people the target?
Who is the Hyde on Wednesday?
After weeks of convincing herself to act on her developing romantic impulses, Wednesday kisses Tyler (Hunter Doohan) one night at the neighbourhood coffee shop in the penultimate episode of the season. She immediately sees Dr Valerie Kinbott (Riki Lindhome), who she had assumed to be the bad guy, being killed by Hyde in a vision.
All the elements for Wednesday suddenly fall into place as Hyde completes the kill and transforms into Tyler. A few days later, Wednesday confronts Tyler about what she observed, luring him into a school shed where Wednesday ties him up using Bianca (Joy Sunday) as bait. But when Tyler vehemently denies the charge, Wednesday tries to torture him to get the truth.
Due to this, Bianca and the other students supporting Wednesday back out and tell Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie) all that has happened. Before Wednesday can harm Tyler, Weems summons Tyler’s father, Sheriff Galpin (Jamie McShane), who finds Wednesday and arrests her. Although Wednesday is cleared of all charges, Tyler wants to meet with her privately before Weems returns to Nevermore to help her pack before catching the train back home the next day (as she was expelled due to breaking the rules one too many times).
Tyler tells Wednesday the truth in this exchange: Tyler is Hyde and knows what he has done. He craved the kill, preying on his victims’ terror before killing them. The actual Laurel Gates, also known as Marilyn Thornhill, had instructed him to pursue Wednesday (Christina Ricci). Tyler threatens Wednesday without revealing who his master is, letting Wednesday see that he’s still at large.
With assistance from the now-awake Eugene (Moosa Mostafa), Wednesday eventually discovers who his master is when he confronts Laurel with Principal Weems, who is impersonating Tyler with her shape-shifting skills. Laurel admits that she found Tyler was Hyde by looking at his mother. In an old photograph where Morticia was the star, his mother had been a student at Nevermore at the same time as Wednesday’s parents.
After they started dating, Tyler’s father tried to conceal the fact that he was aware of this. Tyler was found by Laurel, a horrible woman who was determined to carry out her evil plan to bring back Joseph Crackstone and purge the world of outcasts. She used the trauma of Tyler’s mother’s death to her advantage by releasing Hyde within him.
Tyler is in detention and restrained after the episode after being shot by his father during a quarrel with Enid (Emma Myers), who had just been “wolfed out.” Although he changes in the back of the van, it is evident that he will pose a problem once more if Netflix decides to revive Wednesday for another season.
It’s also likely that Wednesday and Laurel will continue to be a headache for Nevermore and a danger to the outcasts because it’s unclear what happened to Laurel after Wednesday kicked her in the face. In any case, Tyler isn’t your typical Hyde. He is considerably more dangerous since he is conscious of his activities and has a hunger for blood; otherwise, he might escape the control of his master and begin murdering for pleasure.
For the time being, it appears that he is beyond saving, which is heartbreaking for his father, who has lost his wife and is forced to witness his son travel down such a terrible dark path. Now available on Netflix is an entire season of Wednesday.
