BROCKHAMPTON has been winding down since abruptly announcing their “indefinite break” in January, gradually bringing their wild career to an end.
The “greatest boyband since One Direction” has lasted a year, including their final headlining performances at the O2 Academy Brixton in February, their final festival appearances at Coachella in April, and the release of their last album this week.
BROCKHAMPTON, which was ambitious and all-encompassing from the start, completely reimagined the idea of the rap collective.
The History of Brockhampton
Its origin is even more surprising, given the band’s influence. The idea for BROCKHAMPTON first surfaced in a 2010 message on a Kanye West forum. At his Texas high school, 14-year-old Kevin Abstract asked if anyone would be interested in playing in a band with some of his classmates.
AliveSinceForever was the name of this group up until 2014 when some of its members split off and changed their names to BROCKHAMPTON. Along with vocalists, this ensemble included music producers, photographers, and designers. Everyone was listed among the 14 members of the official lineup.

They started releasing their first tracks and took on the moniker “boyband” to redefine the term. All-American Trash, their debut mixtape, was released in 2016. A cult following was gradually growing.
SATURATION
The year that established BROCKHAMPTON was 2017. They published the SATURATION trilogy over six months, consisting of three full-length, genre-defying albums that showcased their originality, ingenuity, startling individuality, and desire to stand out.
Fans were captivated by the band’s DIY attitude, which extended to their vibrant, “homemade” music videos shot in their South Central, Los Angeles neighbourhood. The band’s seven vocalists, led by Abstract and including Matt Champion, Dom McLennon, Joba, Merlyn, and Bearface, had a good rapport with one another.
Ameer Vann, who had established himself as the band’s leader, appeared on the covers of all three albums. BROCKHAMPTON gained popularity as soon as their records were made available, and they were included in the Viceland documentary series American Boyband.
Critical praise for SATURATION I, II, and III propelled the band into the public eye. A $15 million record deal was negotiated with RCA, and a new trilogy of albums was promised. However, everything came to a screeching halt in May 2018 when Vann was accused of sexual assault.
In response to the accusations, BROCKHAMPTON fired Vann from the group, apologised, and called off the rest of their summer 2018 tour dates.
Next to Ameer
The band’s fervent new following was split on Ameer’s dismissal. Many claimed it was the proper choice in light of the growing public awareness of abuse in the entertainment business. Others believed that without one of its original members, the group would not exist.
The remaining BROCKHAMPTON members took time to reassemble and think about the group’s future. They chose to carry on and redefine themselves with their upcoming record, iridescence.
After two weeks of recording at London’s Abbey Road Studios, the album was completed at a retreat in Hawaii, away from increasing media and fan scrutiny. Iridescence, the band’s debut album, received excellent reviews from music reviewers and was nominated for a “Best International Group” BRIT Award.
When the group vented about their major label record deal, the increasing attention they were receiving, and the pressure they felt, critics recognised that the experimental record was at its most successful and the group was at its most unified.
Fans generally agreed that the album was inconsistent and lacklustre, failing to live up to the standards of the SATURATION trilogy. The fanbase still had a rift.
New Highs for Sugar
BROCKHAMPTON’s fifth album, GINGER, was released the following summer. The record, primarily regarded as the one that got them back on track, was processing and confronting the feelings they had experienced over the preceding 12 months.
It was equally triumphant and sad, cocky and guarded, and had elements from Deb Never and slowthai. It is a painful but uplifting listen. On a YouTube Livestream, the band gave the album a complete performance; tellingly, the show was titled Friday Therapy.
Additionally, BROCKHAMPTON and longtime partner Ryan Beatty received their first Platinum Record and TikTok success with the album’s single SUGAR. SUGAR, an intricate, multilayered, and developing R&B pop song, wonderfully encapsulates what BROCKHAMPTON is all about.
It shows how self-assured they are as a boyband, hip-hop crew, and bunch of accomplished producers and musicians. It is worthy of its position as their most widely recognised and well-liked song. The band used the track’s success to propel itself into 2020, and a Dua Lipa remix was released just in time for lockdown.
Technical Difficulties, a mixtape of 24 fast tracks delivered during live streams and made freely downloadable on the band’s website, was BROCKHAMPTON’s lockdown project. Producer Jabari made his singing debut on the mixtape as well.
The Point of No Return
Technical Difficulties previewed songs that would appear on ROADRUNNER, their upcoming album due out in April 2021. Another excellent BROCKHAMPTON album, ROADRUNNER, also has a powerful emotional core thanks to Joba’s verses about losing his father.
Although its release was oddly low-key, it didn’t seem to have the same effect on fans as earlier records. There was a perception among fans that the album’s prominent guest appearances—including Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, and A$AP ROCKY—came at the price of the band’s interplay.
The band’s decision to do two gigs in London and two slots at the Coachella festival in late 2021 instead of cancelling the remainder of their tour dates was the first indication that something was wrong. Then, on January 14, a tweet announcing the dissolution of BROCKHAMPTON was published. A fast-paced career was about to come to an end.
I Already Miss the Band
BROCKHAMPTON acknowledged their transient status in interviews throughout their career. The band was formed to enable a group of creative people to realise a shared aesthetic goal, but it was always understood that they would eventually break out to pursue single careers.
It is a feat that such a vast group could push the envelope to the end, making it through a meteoric rise and overcoming a fandom-splitting issue. At least the fact that the band is disbanding amicably and without ever releasing anything less than fantastic will give fans some solace.

This following will eagerly await whatever Kevin, Matt, Dom, Joba, Merlyn, Bearface, and Jabari decide to accomplish next and will wish Producers Romil and Kiko, Creative Director HK, Webmaster Roberto, Photographer Ashlan, and Manager Jon well in their future endeavours.
The show is over, “All good things must end,” and “I miss the band already,” to cite a few brief comments made on BROCKHAMPTON’s official social media profiles.
