Authorities in Lake Wales said that a driver tried to pass another car in the oncoming lane on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of three persons in a head-on collision.

The collision that happened on State Road 60 East on Saturday at approximately 9:50 p.m. is being looked into by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Winter Haven resident Hannah Wieser, 22, followed a blue Kia van carrying British tourists as she drove west on State Road 60 East, east of County Road 630.

A press release from the Sheriff’s Office stated that Wieser moved into the eastbound lane in order to pass the Kia. She did this and collided head-on with an eastbound Ford F-150.

Luis Rodriguez, 54, and Jomar Maldonado, 52, of Port St. Lucie, together with their 3-year-old grandson Jaydyn, were all in the Ford.

According to the announcement, Weisner in the Flex and Rodriguez and Maldonado in the pickup truck were killed in the collision.

Jaydyn survived the collision in the backseat of the truck because he was securely restrained in his car seat. The press announcement said that he was taken to a nearby hospital and was anticipated to recover fully.

After the collision, the Kia impacted Wieser’s vehicle but sustained little damage. Authorities from the Sheriff’s Office stated that the Port St. Lucie family was making their way back home from Busch Gardens.

The British family was leaving River Ranch and making their way back to their Haines City rental. The inquiry is still going on.
