Pixar has enjoyed enormous success with the series, but is a fourth instalment in the series on the horizon? On his route to a race in the first Cars movie, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) gets lost and is compelled to do community service before he can get out of town and return to racing. After spending time with the locals, the egotistical race vehicle falls in love with the area and learns a little humility.
But even if the success of Cars was less than that of Toy Story or Monsters, Inc., it was still a great hit. Paul Newman and Michael Keaton were also part of the stellar cast (Spider-Man: Homecoming).
Lightning and Finn McMissile, a voiced by Michael Caine, would join forces in Cars 2 for a worldwide race and an espionage mission (The Dark Knight). The aesthetics were appreciated, but the plot and humor were deemed to be missing in the 2011 sequel.
Lightning’s tale appears to have come to an end in Cars 3, as he is injured in a race and must retrain to face a new generation of racers. In comparison to the second film, Cars 3 was seen as a step up in quality and dealt with some darker topics.
As a box office hit, Cars 3 did well, although its statistics were significantly lower than those of its predecessor, Cars 2.
Both Cars 2 and Cars 3 raked in more than $560 million at the box office in 2011. That’s a respectable showing, but when taken in conjunction with the franchise’s uneven reviews, it implies that interest in the Cars series is waning.

As a result, there were countless short films, video games, and a Planes movie franchise. Following the collapse of Disneytoon Studios, a third film in the series was planned, but it was shelved. Considering that the Cars franchise has generated more than $1 billion globally, will Cars 4 ever be released?
Lightning’s trainer, Cruz Ramirez, was introduced in Cars 3 as a substitute for him in the final race. There were rumours that McQueen’s third film would be his final one because of the way it ended, which suggested Cruz would take over as Lightning’s protege in the future. Even though Pixar does not appear to have plans for Cars 4, a fourth film might still have Lightning McQueen racing.
Finding Dory and The Incredibles 2 are just two of the many Pixar sequels that have been released in the last few years. Prior to Toy Story 4, Pixar intends to focus on producing original projects for the foreseeable future.
Cars 4 is still feasible, but it won’t be released in the near future. As a result of Cars 3’s lacklustre success relative to prior films, the series might be on freeze for at least the next several years at least.
