MF Doom Cause of Death: The rapper and producer MF DOOM, whose real name was Daniel Dumile, passed away on October 31, according to a post on his Instagram page made by his wife, Jasmine Dumile, on Thursday. There was no mention of a fatal event. As for his age, he was 49.
Dumile, who was born in London on January 9, 1971, and grew up on Long Island, N.Y., had his rapping debut in the late ’80s as a member of the group KMD, using the stage name Zev Love X. The band’s first album, Mr. Hood, was published in 1991, while their second, Black Bastards, was recorded in 1993 but not released until 2001. Andrew Nosnitsky, a hip-hop journalist, dubbed the latter “a rare forgotten classic.”

Who Was MF Doom?
Dumile was born to a mother from Trinidad and a father from Zimbabwe. When he was young, he and his family relocated to Long Island, New York. In 1988, Dumile, along with his younger brother DJ Subroc and another artist named Rodan, established the rap trio KMD under the alias Zevlove X. In the early 1990s, the band known as KMD (or Causing Much Damage) inked a deal with Elektra Records.
The Dumile and KMD made their first appearance on the music scene on 3rd Bass’ 1991 single The Gas Face. Albums like Mr. Hood and its singles “Peachfuzz” and “Who Me?” became hits for the band in the same year they were released. After his brother Subroc passed away in the late ’90s, Dumile forged forth as a solo artist under the moniker MF Doom.
In 1999, he released his debut solo album, Operation: Doomsday, after making a comeback to the rap industry in 1997. The 2004 album Madvillainy, recorded under the name Madvillain with the crate-digging producer Madlib, became his first album to chart in the United States. Complex states that “some of the most beloved hip-hop albums of all time,” including Mm.. Food and Madvillainy with Madlib, are MF Doom’s work.
Despite “remaining active in the decade that followed and releasing three unique joint efforts,” the rapper has not released a solo album since 2009. The Chocolate Conquistadors, a joint effort with BADBADNOTGOOD, was published earlier this month. A Flying Lotus EP featuring MF Doom was in the works at the time of the rapper’s death, as disclosed by the producer.
Flying Lotus, who had previously collaborated with Doom, was among the first musicians to post an expression of sorrow online. Just playing the music isn’t enough; we have to celebrate DOOM, he said, adding, “My soul is crushed, the weight of this moment.” In response to a fan’s inquiry, he revealed, “I hate to say this but we were actually working on an EP. There were more tracks that I haven’t even heard.”

Why Did MF Doom Wear a Mask?
MF Doom modeled himself after Doctor Doom, the villain from the Fantastic Four comic book series, and began donning a mask reminiscent of the one Doctor Doom wore. The cover art for 1999’s Operation Doomsday features Doctor Doom rapping. “The disguise came out of necessity,” Dumile explained to the New Yorker.
The idea was for him to build a fully realized character out of which to launch an album series. “The plot was taking shape, and in the end, it was a success that gained widespread attention. And now I’m in the position of having to figure out how to get people into shows.
