This article was updated on January 29, 2021, after it was recently reviewed. One of the most costly Netflix shows of all time is ‘Away,’ a sci-fi drama starring Hilary Swank. The show is said to cost $6 million per episode, yet it is well worth the money.
‘Away’ depicts a group of scientists and astronauts on a mission to Mars, lead by Emma (Swank). While the show’s jaw-dropping fireballs in space left viewers in wonder, it’s the message of hope, humanity, and helping one another achieve unimaginable feats that stays in the thoughts and hearts of the audience.
Let’s see what’s ahead for the series after an extremely successful first season.

Is ‘Away’ Renewed For Season 2?
Status of renewal as of October 19, 2020: Canceled. Netflix has decided not to renew ‘Away’ for a second season, Variety announced on October 19, 2020. The show debuted on the platform on September 4th, 2020, and has since risen to the top ten on the platform.
The show’s top ten performance, we thought, was a good sign. We know how important viewership numbers are to Netflix, and we figured that given the show’s popularity, it would be enough to gain a renewal.
Regrettably, this did not occur. Netflix didn’t say why the show was canceled, but Decider offered three possibilities. For starters, it could be because it was costly. Second, the significant production delays caused by the Covid 19 epidemic could compound to the series’ already high costs. Finally, Netflix does not fully own the series. Although ‘Away’ was labeled as a “Netflix Original,” it was really produced by NBC Universal, which licensed the rights to Netflix. This means that the series will eventually return to NBC Universal’s ownership, which may have put the streamer off.
When Will ‘Away’ Season 2 Release On Netflix?
Season 2 will not be available on Netflix because the show has already been canceled (unless the streaming giant changes its mind).
The Plot: What Could Happen In ‘Away’ Season 2?
Jessica Goldberg, the show’s writer and executive producer, had already devised a strategy for the show’s future before getting the official cancellation notification. To be clear, this has nothing to do with green men on Mars.
“When I say life,” Goldberg told Inverse, “I mean like a microorganism.” “I’m not referring to an extraterrestrial.” That was never going to happen on the show.” Season one saw five of the world’s premier space agencies collaborate to send the best astronauts and scientists to Mars.
There was minimal emphasis on private-sector space exploration in the first season, although Goldberg has hinted that this would alter in the second. “Right now, we can’t get far without that private-sector money,” Goldberg explained, “and I think it would be terrific to bring that storyline in.” She went on to say that the show’s writers had spoken about the topic a lot.
On the other hand, there are some minor details that must be addressed. ‘Away’ may have captivated viewers with tales of space travel, but there’s no disputing that the show’s essence revolves around people’s relationships.
How will the space crew’s relationship with their family and loved ones on Earth be affected by the expedition when they are millions of kilometers away?
We won’t know unless the series is picked up by another network, streaming service, or studio.
Who Will Be In The Cast Of ‘Away’ Season 2?
