In Smallville’s final (tenth) season, Sands returned to his role as Jor-El, Superman’s biological father. For the film Bollywood Hero, released in 2009, he played the role of Reg Hunt. In the seventh episode of Season 2 of Person of Interest, he played Alistair Wesley. Onstage in A Celebration of Harold Pinter, directed by John Malkovich and performed in the Pleasance Courtyard during the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he made his debut that year.

The Irish Repertory Theatre extended the run of A Celebration of Harold Pinter by three weeks because of his performance. For the 58th Annual Drama Desk Awards, Sands was nominated for “Outstanding Solo Performance” (2013).

Sands played a younger Henrik Vanger in the 2011 English-language adaption of the mystery thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Sands provided the voice of DeFalco in the 2012 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. On April 26, 2013, it was revealed that Sands would guest star on the eighth season of Dexter as Miles Castner, a successful international businessman.
