Keyboardist and founding member of New York City rap-rock band Luscious Jackson Vivian Trimble passed away on April 4th. The 59-year-old woman.
Luscious Jackson’s Jill Cunniff, Gabby Glaser, and Kate Schellenbach said on social media, “We are heartbroken to announce the demise of our great friend and band member Viv on Tuesday.” She had been undergoing cancer treatment for years when a problem arose on Monday. This was a complete surprise to us. She enjoyed being a partner to David and a mother to Nate and Rebecca more than anything else in the world. She was a wonderful friend and a talented musician and choreographer. We are heartbroken beyond description at the loss of our lovely sister.

Born on May 24, 1963, Vivian Elizabeth Trimble was nurtured in both the United States and France by her musical parents. She graduated from Oberlin College and immediately began instructing GED classes in New York. In 1991, while working at that restaurant, she met Cunniff, who, along with his old buddy Glaser and early Beastie Boys member Schellenbach, had created the band, Luscious Jackson. Trimble joined the group not long after their 1993 contract with Grand Royal Records (owned by the Beastie Boys) was finalized.
In the ’90s, Luscious Jackson became a huge hit at alternative music events like Lollapalooza and Lilith Fair. The band was featured on several MTV shows, including Saturday Night Live and Viva Variety, and had a needle-drop in the 1995 romantic comedy Clueless.

From their 1996 album Fever In Fever Out, the first single “Naked Eye” became the band’s biggest hit. On the Billboard Hot 100, the single peaked at number 36, and the album was eventually certified gold. Meanwhile, Trimble and Cunniff formed a band named Kostars that emphasized acoustic music.
Leaving Luscious Jackson in 1998, Trimble moved on. Soon after, in 2000, she formed the duo Dusty Trails with ex-Breeders bassist Josephine Wiggs, releasing their eponymous debut album. Emmylou Harris provided additional vocals as a special guest.
