The iconic Irish rock duo The Script announced today that co-founding guitarist Mark Sheehan has passed away following a short illness. He was 46. There was a complete lack of information.
“Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness,” the band wrote on social media. “At this difficult time, the family and the band ask that fans please respect their privacy.”
The Script had more number-one songs and albums than any other Irish act from 2010 to 2019, earning them the title of “Official Irish Charts” Artist of the Decade from the Irish Record Music Association. It has had six consecutive No. 1 albums in the UK, including a greatest hits collection released only last year. It also had three No. 1 singles in Ireland and four more Top 5 placements in that country.

The group will be opening for Pink during a string of summer shows around Europe. Sheehan and Danny O’Donoghue, a singer and keyboardist for the late ’90s Dublin boy band Mytown, were childhood friends. Before returning to the UK, the duo spent some time in the United States, where they signed a brief record deal with Universal and had a hit with “Party All Night.” When they eventually moved back to Dublin, they formed The Script with the help of drummer Glen Power in the early 2000s.

After relocating to London, the band released its self-titled first album in 2008, which quickly became the most popular record in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In 2018, the band took home the International Award at the Silver Clef Awards in the United Kingdom. The Script had some success in the United States as well; their 2008 single “Breakeven” reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and three of their albums charted in the Top 15 (with Science & Faith reaching No. 3). On October 29th, 1976, Sheehan entered this world in Dublin. His wife of 18 years, Rina Sheehan, and their three children, Cameron, Avery, and Lil, survive him. He was also a performer, songwriter, and producer.
