He has been the vice-chair of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a group that keeps an eye on the federal government, since 2016. Tina Smith, recently appointed, defeated Painter in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party primary for Minnesota’s U.S. Senate seat in 2018.

In July 2015, Richard was diagnosed with shingles and Ramsay Hunt syndrome type 2, which primarily caused the right side of Painter’s face to become paralyzed. The virus that causes shingles causes a painful skin rash with little blisters.

The rash often appears as a single, wide mark on the left or right side of the body or face. Similar to Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Type 1, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Type 2 can be recognized by clinical symptoms; however, in cases of doubt, PCR or direct immunofluorescent testing of vesicular fluid can help with the diagnosis.
In addition, laboratory testing, including WBC count, ESR, and electrolytes, can distinguish between infectious and inflammatory etiologies.
