The Dallas Cowboys announced on Thursday that Pro Football Hall of Famer Gil Brandt has passed away. Brandt was generally recognized as the architect who helped construct the Cowboys into one of the most successful and popular sports organizations of all time. The age of Brandt’s 91st year was noted.
Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, stated, “Gil was at the very core of the early success of the Dallas Cowboys and continued to serve as a great ambassador for the organization for decades beyond that.”
Brandt was elected into the Hall of Fame in 2019 after a six-decade management career in the NFL, including 29 years with the Cowboys. Brandt was praised for his talent spotting as the Cowboys’ VP of player personnel, as nine of the players he picked went on to join him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 1960, he made defensive tackle Bob Lilly his first-round pick. According to the Hall of Fame, his last major impact on a selection was in 1989, when the Cowboys picked quarterback Troy Aikman.
When picking a young man from the US Naval Academy in the 10th round of the 1964 draft, Brandt seemed to have a crystal ball. Roger Staubach won the Heisman Trophy as a collegiate quarterback, but he had to serve in the military for four years before being allowed to join the team in 1969.

“Staubach came to us as a 27-year-old rookie,” Brandt told NFL.com in 2016. “Even while he was in the service, he’d write to me, asking for footballs to practice with – one time, he asked me to send more after the shipment we’d sent had been blown up by a mortar shell.”
Brandt and the Cowboys were rewarded for their faith in Staubach. The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback entered the Hall of Fame in 1985 after compiling an 85-29 record as a starter.
Brandt oversaw Dallas’ run to the Super Bowls VI and XII when they triumphed both times. Between 1966 and 1985, the club had 20 straight winning seasons, earning the moniker “America’s Team.”
Brandt is acknowledged by the Hall of Fame as the “first person to incorporate computers for scouting and talent evaluations and the first individual to use psychological tests to evaluate the mental makeup of prospective players under pressure.”
The NFL Scouting Combine is an offshoot of these sorts of successful assessments. The annual player draft, which Brandt has helped expand into a three-day, made-for-TV spectacle, is another of Brandt’s accomplishments.

“His innovative approach to scouting and player evaluation helped the organization find players others overlooked. The result was discovering future Cowboys from smaller colleges, or even off college basketball or track teams,” said Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter.
“He is credited with advancing the use of computers in the front office of pro football teams, but the real computer was the one in his own head, where he stored an incredible amount of information that he loved to share with anyone who appreciated the game like he did.”
According to the Hall of Fame, once his lengthy career with the Cowboys ended, Brandt put his knowledge to use as an analyst for NFL.com and national radio broadcasts.
Jones culminated his dedication to Brandt by saying, “There are very few people that have been able to have the kind of generational impact that he did. Gil was as dedicated to growing this league and sport as anyone ever was, and we are all grateful and better for it.”
