On April 5, 2003, at the age of 84, George A. Van Tassel passed away at the Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. On September 9, 1918, he was born to parents Alexander and Kathleen Donavon Van Tassel in Brighton, England. George’s formative years were spent in Centreville, New Brunswick, where he attended public school and ultimately earned his diploma from Centreville High.

Defence of the Country

George joined the Royal Canadian Navy when he was only 19 years old out of a sense of duty. His brave service aboard the battleships HMS Restigouche, HMS Camrose, and HMS Sioux during WWII earned him the title of “Lead Signalman.” He was totally devoted to his country.

On April 9th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., friends and family of George Van Tassel are invited to the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, to offer their condolences. The Reverend Ralph Moore will preside over a Eucharistic Celebration in his honour at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on White Street in Rockland at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Seaview Cemetery in Rockport has been selected as the final resting place. George A. Van Tassel’s dedication to his country, his community, and his family defined his life. His loyalty, selflessness, and determination will be long remembered.

Law Enforcement and Professional Endeavors

After being discharged from the military with honour in 1945, George Van Tassel settled back into civilian life in St. John, New Brunswick, where he joined the police force and worked his way up to the rank of Sergeant Detective. The family eventually settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked as a hotel manager for a number of years.

Living in Harmony

George wed Barbara Barrett on his birthday, September 9, 1967, in the lovely town of Camden. Together, they started a new and wonderful chapter in his life.

Entrepreneurship and Participation in Society

George Van Tassel was a hardworking businessman and devoted family man. He started the company he ran till retirement, Camden Home Modernizing.

His deep sense of civic duty was demonstrated by his decades-long involvement with the Rockland Kiwanis Club and his leadership roles with the Knox County Republicans. He helped out with organizations like Meals on Wheels and the Rockland Public Library in his spare time.

Trust and Dedication

Faith was important to George Van Tassel. He formerly attended and served on the Vestry of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden. He was also a dedicated member of the Vestry and Building Committee at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rockland, where he had attended for many years.

Involvement of the Sunshine State

George has spent the winters in Inverness, Florida, for nearly twenty years now. He joined St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church and volunteered extensively at the Citrus County Public Library and felt at home there. The Inverness Kiwanis Club recognized his dedication to the neighbourhood by making him an Honorary Member.

History and Children

Barbara, George’s loving wife of Rockland, and Carl Griffith and Patricia, his stepson and step-daughter-in-law, of Venice, Florida, are all he leaves behind.

He is also survived by his wife, Nancy Standel, and their three step-daughters: Betty Guiford and Patricia Morgan, both of Rockland, and Nancy Standel and Philip Standel, of Ellsworth.

Vera and John Hill, his sister and brother-in-law from Rockland, were very special to him. His seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren are living proof of his lasting impact.
