Autopsy results published Thursday by the Shelby County Medical Examiner show that 29-year-old Black man Tyre Nichols, who was savagely beaten by Memphis police officers following a traffic stop earlier this year, died of blunt force injuries to the head.
The analysis, first obtained by CBS News Memphis affiliate WREG-TV, concluded that Nichols’ death was a homicide. Nichols had blood clots all over his body, as well as liver failure and kidney impairment, according to the autopsy results. The autopsy report confirms that Nichols was brain dead at the time of his death, despite being placed on a ventilator immediately upon arriving at the hospital.
Tyre Nichols Cause Of Death
Nichols was detained by Memphis police following a traffic check on January 7, and he died three days later, on January 10. Police reported at the time that a “confrontation” occurred when they approached Nichols’ car. According to the police, he departed the scene before another “confrontation” could occur.

However, footage of the incident showing the severe assault was revealed at the end of January, prompting widespread indignation. The four clips originated from police dashboards and roving camera footage.
Disturbing photographs of Nichols being detained and assaulted by the five officers at a suburban intersection were captured on camera after authorities had removed him from a vehicle after stopping him.
In relation to Nichols’ killing, five ex-Memphis police officers have been charged with second-degree murder and have all entered not-guilty pleas. While the inquiry continued, three firefighters who responded to the site were also terminated from their positions.

In a statement posted to Twitter on Wednesday, civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci said that the autopsy results “are highly consistent with our own reporting back in January of this year,” referring to the results of an independent autopsy conducted in January and commissioned by the attorneys, which concluded that Nichols died of “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating.” The report’s conclusions were not disclosed in their entirety.
