One of the most influential American musicians of the late 1990s and early 2000s was Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. The rapper was best known for her work as the lead lyricist for the R&B group TLC, and her legacy lives on in endearing throwbacks like “No Scrubs,” “Waterfalls,” and “Creep” that reference the turn of the century.

Lopes was also a well-known activist and controversial figure offstage. She brought attention to serious causes, such as gang violence and AIDS, by using her fame and TLC’s songs. Still, she grabbed attention for another reason: she and her football player boyfriend, Andre Rison, lost their $1.3 million home in a fire.

In 2002, the unexpected death of 30-year-old Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was also shrouded in mystery. It was soon learned that weeks before her untimely death, she had been a passenger in a van that had tragically struck a 10-year-old Honduran kid with the surname Lopes.

In the days before her untimely death, Lopes filmed footage in which she says she feels like a “spirit” is haunting her; this material was eventually shown in a VH1 program titled The Last Days of Left Eye.

This article will fill you in on the bizarre and tragic events that led to the death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

In the 1990s, Lopes found recognition as a member of the R&B girl group TLC, alongside Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. In the early 2000s, TLC was one of the most popular girl groups in the world; thus, fans were crushed by the news of Lopes’ sudden death.

She was only 30 when she died on April 25, 2002, in Honduras from her injuries sustained in an automobile accident. When she “lost control,” her spokesman Jay Marose told The New York Times, she was driving a leased Mitsubishi.

Lisa Lopes tragically lost her life in a car accident in Roma, Jutiapa, Guatemala. The incident occurred due to excessive speed and the inability to maintain control of the rented SUV, leading to severe head injuries caused by blunt force trauma.

Watkins released a statement at the time reading, “We have truly lost our sister.” Our unity will never be broken.
