A professional ice hockey game on Saturday resulted in the terrible death of Adam Johnson, a 29-year-old American. Johnson, a British player, was showcasing his skills for the Nottingham Panthers at the Utilita Arena Sheffield versus the Sheffield Steelers.
The terrible incident occurred during the game, and it is thought that Johnson was accidentally grazed in the throat by a skate blade.

Adam Johnson, an American hockey player, sadly died in an on-ice event that has rocked the hockey world. Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in the United Kingdom. Sheffield Steelers player Matt Petgrave, who had apparently lost his footing from a previous incident on the ice, reportedly hit Johnson in the neck during the second period of the game. The Utilita Arena crowd gasped when they saw Johnson’s bloody shirt dripping onto the floor. He skated away from the crime site heroically but then passed out.
Kari Johnson, Johnson’s mom, said on Facebook on Sunday that she was grieving the loss of “half of my heart” after hearing the news that her son, age 29, had passed away. Johnson needed emergency medical attention. Therefore, the game was stopped in the 35th minute.

On the ice, his teammates formed a ring around him, and screens were set up to prevent onlookers from seeing what happened. Petgrave’s elevated leg on the middle line accidentally kicked someone, causing an accident. The hockey community rallied behind Petgrave after the kick, stressing that it was unprovoked.
The match announcer, David Simms, wrote on X:

After receiving word at 8:20 p.m., the Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances and a critical care paramedic to the arena. The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield received Adam Johnson immediately. Due to the seriousness of the medical issue, all 8,000 spectators were asked to leave the arena shortly after the occurrence.
Adam Johnson was a rising star in the hockey world before an injury ended his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). His career took him to the American Hockey League, where he played for the Ontario Reign and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
