Our hearts go out to Eddie Flores’s loved ones at CBS 4. His family stated he battled cancer for ten years, and the fight was difficult. Sarah Gomez Flores, Eddie’s wife, announced his death on Twitter on a Tuesday afternoon.
“To all that loved him and were touched by him, we announce the passing of our beloved Eddie R Flores. He fought a hard battle with cancer since 2013 and faced many challenges. Through it all, he was a tough Marine and a faithful Christian. His wife , children, grandchildren, mother, and sisters ask for our time to reflect,” she said. “I will always love and remember you, my love. Rest in peace.”

Eddie joined the Marines in 1986 and, according to his profile on LinkedIn, worked in the supply and distribution of aircraft ordnance. Upon leaving the military in 1989, he moved to Yuma, Arizona, to begin a career as a sports reporter. Before settling in the Valley as a news anchor, he gained experience in numerous other television areas.
He joined CBS 4 in 2015 to lead our nightly newscasts. Later on, he was the primary news anchor for our Midland affiliate. Marco Ramirez, the CBS 4 morning anchor, and Flores both spent time at KMID. Marco was devastated to learn this, he said.
“While Eddie Flores spent a long time reporting here in the Rio Grande Valley. I had the privilege of working with him at my very first Reporting job at KMID in Odessa, Texas. While I only got to work with him for a brief time, I still consider him as one of the best mentors I had as a reporter. Rest in Peace,” Marco shared on Facebook.
Meteorologist in charge at NBC 23, Freddy Vela, reflected on his longtime friend. It’s not often that one gets to say, “I got to work with Eddie.” His self-assurance was unparalleled while he was on air. Freddy recalled lovingly how dedicated he was to being the first to report the story and providing as much detail as possible.

“Off air, he was loud, brash, and beyond funny. He loved to joke and dance, but what I remember the most were our conversations. He always had Whataburger and would tell me about his parents and about his time as a Marine. It meant a lot to hear those stories. I’ll never forget him.”
Jim Danner, senior meteorologist for CBS 4, was a close friend of Eddie’s. For a long time, they were inseparable.
“I received word today that my friend Eddie Flores passed away. He was one the first people that I met when I first came to the RGV back in 2015. And we kept in touch long after that. Many people will remember his great news anchoring and reporting. May you rest in peace, my Dear Friend.”
Eddie is mourned by his family, including his wife, kids, and grandkids. The funeral has not yet taken place.
