Laura Lynch, a lynchpin of the Dixie Chicks’ original lineup, passed away Friday in a vehicle accident in Texas. At 65 years old, she passed away. The local justice of the peace Nikol Endres verified the body’s demise.
A pickup truck traveling west crossed into Ms. Lynch’s lane and hit her vehicle head-on while she was traveling east on Route 62 near Cornudas, Texas, approximately 70 miles east of El Paso, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Lynch is from Fort Worth. At the scene, her body was declared dead.
Lynch, who played bass and was born and reared on a ranch in Texas, co-founded the Dixie Chicks—now called the Chicks—in Dallas in 1988 with Robin Lynn Macy, Emily Strayer, and Martie Maguire, two sisters. “Thank Heavens for Dale Evans” (1990) and “Little Ol’ Cowgirl” (1992) were the only two albums released by the original lineup.
Ms. Lynch called the band’s sound “cowgirl music” in a 1992 interview with NPR. “Our brand of cowgirl music is a mixture of old-time country music, bluegrass music, acoustic,” she said. “We all sing three-part and four-part harmony. We throw in some instrumentals, some country swing. That’s our brand of cowgirl music.”
In 1992, Ms. Macy decided to resign from the band. The surviving trio had moderate success with the release of “Shouldn’t A Told You That” the following year. At President Bill Clinton’s inauguration party in 1993, the band performed. However, Natalie Maines succeeded Ms. Lynch in 1995 and Ms. Lynch was fired.
On the brink of our seventh year, we were beginning to reassess everything, Ms. Maguire told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1996. “We were deciding on something for the future.” She added: “What do we want to do in the future, where do we want to be in five years? I don’t think Laura really saw herself on the road five years from now.”
“Infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band,” the Chicks said on social media, describing Ms. Lynch as a “bright light.” “Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band,” the Chicks said.

“Her undeniable talents helped propel us beyond busking on street corners to stages all across Texas and the Midwest.” There was a delay in getting information regarding those who managed to escape.
The Star-Telegram reports that following her departure from the Dixie Chicks, Ms. Lynch took a position as a public relations officer at Dallas’s University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
She began painting in 2003 and devoted a lot of time to raising her daughter, she told The Associated Press. “Being in the band was worth it,” Ms. Lynch remarked. “I would even risk anemia if I had to do it again.”
