Russian Doll Season 3 Storyline

Nadia is on her way home from work when she accidentally travels back to the 1980s on the 6 train. With her heels stuck in the New York City sands of 1982, she encounters Chez, an amateur gold-coin thief. Nadia joins him in the robbery and heads home with the mustachioed man afterward.

In the bathroom, she looks in the mirror and realizes that she is a fetus inside her mother Lenora’s womb. She goes back in time to 2022 and questions a family acquaintance, Ruth, about Chez and the stolen coins. When Nadia returns to the 1980s, she discovers that Chez has already made off with the family fortune.

Nadia is still on the prowl for her kidnapped heirloom. In 2022, she discovers an older Chez and visits him. Asked what happened to Chez’s ex-girlfriend, Lenora, Chez replied, “I don’t have her gold.” A picture of Chez as a squash champion appears to Nadia, and she uses this as a hint to track him down in the past. Chez claims to have shared the money with Lenora back in the 1980s.

The gold has already been spent, as Nadia and a younger Ruth find together. Besides the sports automobile, she also invested in some furs. Items are returned and the money is exchanged for Krugerrands. As a show of gratitude, Ruth even gives up her wedding band. Nadia misplaces the gold while riding the train back to town.

“The gold train to Berlin,” relates Nadia’s great-grandmother Vera about the Nazi looting of her family’s antiques. A wartime disappearance has prompted Nadia to look into this train. As her mental state deteriorates, she begins to separate from Lenora’s body. She is sent to a psychiatric hospital after having chats with Nora. She flees and returns to the year 2022. Behind an old photograph, Nadia discovers a receipt for the gold train things. A Nazi Captain from Budapest, 1944, has signed the receipt.

Alan resolves to travel back in time on the sixth train and takes on the identity of his late grandma Agnes, whom he has never met. In East Berlin in 1962, she was a young student. Lenny, a German student, wants to tunnel to West Berlin to meet his family. Alan becomes romantically involved with Lenny. Nadia and her companion Maxine visit Budapest in the present day. They’re on the prowl for Kristof, a distant relative of the Nazi Captain. They’re all invited to a party by the grandson, where they do drugs. Instead of waking up in New York City in the 1980s, Nadia finds herself in Budapest in 1944.

Alan argues with Nadia, telling her she has broken time with her deeds. Nadia refuses to address the problem, glad to stay in this new reality until she watches infinite Ruth strolling up the stairs to her celebration. To get out of this jam, they decide to board the train once more. They are both knocked out cold as a speeding carriage runs them over.

Alan speaks with Agnes and Nadia with her mother. Finally, both Alan and Nadia come to terms with the fact that they both have a mother. Their time travel takes them back to the day of Ruth’s funeral. Nadia peers into the mirror’s reflection and smiles.
