Garrison Brown’s Mental Illness
“Sister Wives” actress Maddie Brown Brush is spreading awareness about mental health, social media, and the aftermath of her brother Garrison Brown’s suicide, two weeks after his passing.
The “Sister Wives” star talked about her brother’s health in a new Instagram video posted on March 5. He died suddenly that same day.
She said, “Mental health is so important and I don’t think we talk about it enough and I don’t think we do enough to bring awareness. It wasn’t bullying. It wasn’t a lack of love that Garrison had. It was mental health.”
“And I am going to continue talking about mental health and self-care until I am blue in the face because I don’t think it’s talked about enough in a way that people understand it.”
NBC News was told by police in Flagstaff, Arizona, that the 25-year-old seemed to have died by suicide.
In the post’s caption, she wrote: “I shared with a friend, who has also been intimately touched by the tragedy of suicide, how surreal it feels to step back into the rhythm of ‘normal life’ — observing others engaged in their everyday routines while my mind remains consumed with thoughts of Garrison. She acknowledged that the shadow of such a loss lingers for months. However, I am not naive to the fact that returning to what once was ‘normal’ won’t be happening. I find myself prepared to start getting back into this new normalcy.”

Brown Brush said she thinks that social media made her brother’s life worse. She said, “Social media is not real … it’s a highlight reel and that was something that Garrison and I talked a lot about. Garrison used to feel like he wasn’t doing enough because he was comparing himself to things on social media. I don’t think that it’s real and I think we need to remember that.”
At the end of her video, she talked about how important “community” was during the grief process and how thankful she was for her brothers’ support. She also thanked everyone for the “pouring of love” that has been shown to her family.
For Brown Brush, who has three kids, the first week after his brother died was “horrible.” She said that the week after, while her kids were on spring break, she gave herself time to cry.
Two of Janelle and Kody Brown’s six children, Garrison and Maddie Brown Brush, grew up in a polygamous household. In December 2022, their parents told them they were splitting up. Kody Brown has been married four times before, but all of them ended.
