Delahunt represented Massachusetts’s 10th congressional district for 14 years, from 1997 to 2011, in the U.S. House of Representatives. After serving in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 to 1975, he also held the position of district attorney for Norfolk County from 1975 to 1996.
According to news sources, the Delahunt family released a statement on Saturday stating that he died “peacefully,” although they did not specify the cause of his passing.
The statement read, “While we mourn the loss of such a tremendous person, we also celebrate his remarkable life and his legacy of dedication, service, and inspiration. We could always turn to him for wisdom, solace, and a laugh, and his absence leaves a gaping hole in our family and our hearts.”
Delahunt has long served the public as a legislator in the nation’s capital and a prosecutor in the county south of Boston, according to Democratic U.S. Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts.
Markey stated in a press release, “I met with Bill in Quincy in February, and he was clear and as committed as ever to working on behalf of the South Shore and the people of Massachusetts.”
He further said, “It is a fitting honor that the door of the William D. Delahunt Norfolk County Courthouse opens every day so that the people inside can do the hard work of making lives better, as Bill Delahunt did. The Commonwealth and the country are better for Bill Delahunt’s vision and service.”
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro shared a message on a social media platform, previously known as Twitter, expressing sadness over Delahunt’s death. Delahunt, who was a member of Congress, helped negotiate a deal in 2005 with then-Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to provide heating oil for people in Massachusetts who had low incomes.

January 2011 saw Delahunt’s resignation from the U.S. House. He told The Boston Globe that he had previously thought about retiring, but Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, a more seasoned Bay State senator, persuaded him that he was still required to support Obama’s legislative ambitions at the time.
According to reports, Delahunt was an early supporter of Obama, being the first member of the congressional delegation to support the Illinois senator’s presidential campaign.
Bruno Rodríguez, a Cuban diplomat and politician also said on Twitter, “Our heartfelt condolences to relatives and friends of Massachusetts ex-Congressman and outstanding US politician William Delahunt. Cuba loses a friend who always advocated and supported the end of the blockade and the improvement of relations between our peoples.”
